Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 27th March 2010 v Burton Leonard Bullets.

The final league game of the season was played in early spring sunshine, albeit still a little on the chilly side. The coaches had a full squad to select from with a number of key players returning from illness after missing the last game.

The first game kicked off with George in goal, joined in the outfield by David, Luke, Tom, Ewan, Sam and Cameron. Scotton went straight on the offensive with Ewan down the right wing, supplying Callum whose shot was saved. Burton looked like they wanted to play deep but break out quickly and an early opportunity was well covered in defence by David. Burton then had two corners in quick succession, the second flying over the bar.

David continued to show his tackling ability breaking up play in midfield as Burton threatened again, before he got in on the action down the right wing,. The game became condensed in the middle of the park; however some good work from Tom found Ewan whose shot was well saved by the Burton ‘keeper’. The away side then launched a decisive break forward and despite Ewan’s best efforts to clear the ball it rolled into the net; 1-0 to the visitors.

Scotton didn’t let their heads drop by this early set back, forcing the visitors back and winning a corner, Ewan’s in swinger was cleared, but the ball came back to Ewan who did well to find Tom, whose shot went just wide. Scotton continued to press forward, winning a free kick on the left which Tom launched into the box, again the visitors held firm and cleared the danger. Luke then got into the action, tackling well in midfield and finding Sam who cleared the ball up field. Sam was then replaced by Wilf who was immediately in the action, getting in a shot which squeezed past the ‘keeper’ and post, 1-1 and Scotton were deservedly back in the game.

Burton then came straight back at Scotton, forcing two corners, the first cleared by Ewan and then the second hitting the post before the ball was scrambled out. The home side then counter attacked with Ewan finding Tom, whose excellent cross field pass found Cameron just as the half time whistle went; HT 1-1.

Craig changing ‘keepers’ at half time, with Cameron going in the nets and George taking his place in the outfield. The second half started with Scotton going straight on the attack, George did well to take the ball forward but the attack was broken up by Burton, who went forward themselves, Luke did well to stop play but the visitors got in a shot which was well saved by Cameron, but the defence could not stop the rebound being tapped in, 2-1 to Burton.

Again Scotton regrouped, Tom threading a lovely ball through to George, who was one on one with the ‘keeper’ but could not turn the ball into the net. Luke continued to play well in midfield, not giving the visitors time to build any meaningful attacks. Tom then got back to help stop another Burton attack, heading the ball out and then picking it up and dribbling past two players before finding Ewan, who did well to get the ball back to Tom, who in turn played George in only for the visitors to foul George as he looked well set to get in a shot.

Tom took command of the free kick and whipped in an excellent shot from outside of the box, the ‘keeper’ managed to push the shot away but only to George who found the left hand corner of the net, 2-2 game on!

With the full time whistle fast approaching Wilf and David worked the ball well in midfield, finding Tom who in turn tried to move the ball to George before the visitors sniffed out any chance on goal. Burton then launched a succession of attacks, a shot well saved by Cameron and then two corners which were well cleared by Ewan and Tom as the game finished in a draw, 2-2 and well played to both sides for an entertaining game of football.

The second game saw Ben take his place in goal, with the outfield line up consisting of Callum, James, Jack, Darren, Sam A and Charlie.

James quickly got into his stride, finding Callum whose shot hit the post and rebounded to Darren whose effort was well saved by the Burton ‘keeper’. Sam A then got involved putting in a good tackle to stop the visitors breaking into the Scotton box; Burton continued to press the home side with Callum getting back to clear the ball and Ben producing a fine save to keep the scores level.

Having soaked up the visitor’s pressure, James managed to get the ball forward to Callum whose shot hit the side netting. Charlie did well to clear a Burton free kick, finding James who showed his skill down the left wing, going passed two defenders before finding Charlie in the box who buried it into the visitors net, 1-0 to Scotton. Get in there!

Scotton threatened to overrun Burton, with Darren, James and Callum combining well, Callum’s shot just going wide. Burton then came back into the game, producing a succession of shots which were well stopped by Ben, the third attempt on goal producing a shot which Ben could do nothing about, 1-1 and the visitors were right back in the game.

It was now end to end stuff with Darren doing well to find Callum whose shot hit the bar and went over. Burton attacked the home goal again and a shot came in which Ben could not stop, 2-1 to Burton.

Darren, James and Callum kept up the pressure despite the set back of going behind, Darren seeing a shot saved whilst James found Callum in a good position and shot just wide. Callum was not to be denied however and as half time approached he won a corner which Darren planted in the box and Callum slide in to make it 2-2 as the whistle went for half time.

At half time Wilf replaced Jack. Sam A showed good work as the second half started winning a throw in close to the Burton penalty area. Ben then continued his fine form in goal with an excellent save after another Burton break. Burton then tried to press for a winner, two shots going just wide of the Scotton goal.

Scotton however launched their own attack on the Burton goal, Sam A doing well to win a corner; Wilf whipped it into the box, James picked up the loose ball and found Callum in space, who in turn passed to Charlie whose shot went through a crowd of players into the net, 3-2 to Scotton and what a well worked goal.

Charlie almost added another after some good play down the right wing, his shot going just wide. Craig then had to make another change after Wilf picked up an injury and was replaced by Sam. Ben then made an excellent stop to deny a Burton equaliser. The corner that followed was cleared quickly by Scotton, Callum finding James who moved forward and found Charlie, who returned the ball to James and his shot went in only to be disallowed for handball. Just as the final whistle approached Burton broke forward and squeezed the ball into the Scotton goal, 3-3 at full time and a fair result with both sides contributing to another excellent game.
