Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 12th December 2009 v Tockwith

Another damp and gloomy day greeted the U9’s squad who travelled to Tockwith for the last fixture of 2009. The first team to play consisted of George in goal and Callum, Darren, Ewan, Tom, Owen and Sam A.

Scotton got quickly into their stride, Tockwith’s early play was cleverly disrupted by Sam A and Ewan who also cleared an early corner, leading to a breakaway attack from Callum who calmly slotted the ball pass the home ‘keeper’; 1-0 to Scotton and an excellent start!

This provided Scotton with real encouragement and Callum continued to apply pressure down the right, an excellent cross leading to two corners in succession. Tockwith then managed a period of pressure themselves, and only good defending from Callum kept the visitors ahead.

Scotton again took the game to the home side, first Tom burst forward and then after good defending from Owen in midfield Callum managed to win a corner, this led to a scramble in the box and Ewan placed his shot inside the far post; 2-0 to Scotton!

The visitors continued to pressure the home side with Darren coming into the game strongly and any attacking intent from Tockwith was snuffed out by some good defensive tackling from Callum. Back in the Tockwith half Callum showed his attacking abilities with an excellent shot which was well saved but dropped to the feet of Tom who could not miss from 3 yards; 3-0 to the visitors. With half time fast approaching Darren, Callum and Sam all tested the home ‘keeper’, the last action of the first half saw some excellent defensive play from Sam A.

At half time Craig made one substitute, taking Callum off who had picked up a bit of a knock and bringing on Charlie who swapped places with George in goal.

Tockwith started the second half strongly but Scotton’s defence held firm with Ewan getting in an important tackle to deny the home side. Darren then showed his tenacity in midfield and Scotton started to really increase the tempo, holding their shape well and working hard as a team; some good pressure led to Tom winning the ball in midfield and unleashing an unstoppable shot from 12 yards to make it 4-0!

Scotton were now playing with real confidence but Tockwith managed to get into their half to break up the pressure and Charlie was called upon to make an excellent save to deny Tockwith. Scotton continued to attack however with Darren and Tom working well together down the left, Tom got a cross into the box and George was on hand to turn it into the net; 5-0 to Scotton! The away side continued to keep up the pressure, with Darren in majestic form creating a number of well worked chances and it was not long before a sixth goal came when Darren deservedly got on the score sheet with an excellent finish.

This seemed to galvanise the home side who quickly responded and made it 1-6, a well worked goal which was a reward for their endeavours. Some good defensive work from Ewan, Tom and Darren ensured they conceded no further goals and back in the Tockwith half Sam A and Ewan got stuck in with some excellent tackles which led to a scramble in the box and George was on hand to get his second and make it 7-1 to Scotton! And there was still time for Tom to get away from the Tockwith defence and slot the ball into the far corner for a deserved hat-trick; 8-1 to Scotton before the full time whistle blew.

The team for the second game consisted of Charlie, John, Jack, James, Luke, Wilf and Ben in goal. The game started as the first game had finished with Scotton applying early pressure with excellent work from James and Charlie leading to a couple of early corners. Wilf showed some good skill with an excellent tackle which fell to Charlie who managed to get in an excellent cross which found James who buried it into the net, 1-0 Scotton and an excellent start to the game.

Tockwith tried to take the game to Scotton but the defence held together well, with James and Charlie both getting in excellent shots which just went wide. The away side continued to apply pressure winning three corners in succession after good work from John and Wilf, with James again going close with an excellent shot before the ref blew for half time with the score 1-0 to the visitors.

Craig introduced Callum for the second half in place of Charlie and immediately Scotton put the home side under pressure with three corners in quick succession following a good shot from Wilf. John and Luke were breaking up play well in midfield, stopping Tockwith from making any progress however eventually the pressure from the home side began to tell and Tockwith managed to get a good shot on goal which Ben could do nothing about; 1-1 and game on!

This provided Tockwith with real encouragement and they started taking the game to the visitors, although Callum still managed to create another shooting opportunity against the run of play, it was only a matter of time before the pressure finally told and Tockwith finally went ahead with an excellent shot, 2-1 to the home side. Scotton continued to show excellent spirit and good work from James led to a run from Callum who placed the ball past the ‘keeper’ into the back of the net to make it 2-2.

However no sooner had Tockwith restarted then they were back in front following a couple of half chances it was third time lucky as a shot from just outside the box ended up in the back of the net, 3-2 to the home side. With full time fast approaching Tockwith tried to apply further pressure and just before the final whistle they added a fourth to make it 4-2 to the home side.
