Scorchers Brought Down By Rockets

In their first match of 2012, Scotton Scorchers Under 8's played the local derby against Ripley Rockets at Scotton Cricket Club on a cold but sunny morning.

The first match kicked off and it seemed as though the boys were still asleep as they quickly conceded three goals without really touching the ball! Once they had woken up, the boys started to battle for possession and breeched the flow of goals. Ben R made a couple of brave blocks to deny Ripley a fourth goal and the defence of Harry D and Ennis M were kept busy dealing with the mobile Ripley forwards. Jacob K, playing as a lone striker, made a couple of surging runs but, each time he was denied a clear shot on goal. Two more goals were scored by Ripley as a result of their fast flowing football and clinical finishing to make the score at half time 5-0.

The second half brought a few changes, one being Freddie D replacing Ben R in goal and he was immediately called into action to block at the strikers feet to deny Ripley a 6^th goal. The second half was evenly balanced and Sam H was able to start bossing the midfield and pressure was increased on the Ripley defence. Harry D was playing sensibly and frequently combined with Jacob K down the left side but a first goal proved elusive. Antony S was working hard in midfield in order to win the ball back and his storming runs brought a succession of corners which were unable to be converted.

At the other end of the pitch, Freddie D was having a storming game in goal, producing one of the saves of the season to dive full length to push a deflected shot around the post. Ennis M was the often playing as the lone defender and on several occasions he was called into action, doing well to hold up the Ripley players until his team mates got back to help out.

Despite numerous attempts for both sides, there were no more goals and credit to the boys for fighting back so well after a slow start. Final score: 5-0.

The boys made a much better start to the second match and it was clear that they had learnt their lesson. All the boys got stuck in and battled to keep Ripley at bay. Sam H kept control of the midfield and his determined running almost led to a goal as he shot just wide. Tom J seemed to enjoy playing in front of the defence and used the ball sensibly when the opportunity arose. Antony continued his tireless running and was unlucky not to score the opening goal when his shot was blocked. Ripley scored the first goal after their goal keeper's long clearance caused confusion our defence to allow their forward to finish neatly despite Freddie's best attempts. From the restart, Jacob K shot narrowly wide as we tried to find an equaliser. Half time 1-0.

The second half saw Sam H move into goal and he was immediately called into action, blocking a shot from near the corner flag. However, Ripley's powerful forwards them managed to score a couple of quick goals. Callum H was having a great half and one of his powerful runs down the wing led to a goal mouth scramble which ended when Ben R poked his shot just wide. From the resulting goal kick, a clever volleyed pass from Freddie D led to Jacob hitting a snap shot from the edge of the box that flew just over the bar. A fourth goal for Ripley resulted in a final score of 4-0 which we felt was not a fair representation of the match. The lads all battled hard and showed great spirit, team work and determination and there were plenty of candidates for player of the day. This was awarded to Freddie D for his outstanding display in goal.

U9 Scotton v Ripley - Sat 21 Jan - Match reports

RIPLEY RETURN LEGS SHOW SCOTTON SQUADS STRENGTH AND BRING TWO GREAT WINS!

Saturday saw the U9s return fixtures against local rivals Ripley - who gave us our one and only defeat all season so far. Boys and coaches where determined to show how much they had developed as a team in the way we play and in how we think about the games.

We knew their tactics, - strong forwards and long balls from the back - (the 'Stoke' of the Nidderdale league wouldn't be unkind comment) and we needed to show that we could cope with this and still play football in conditions that were a little muddy.

A full squad today allowed the Coaches options, with Match 1 starting with Ethan in goal, James H and Lew D as centre halfs at the back, Tom M and Lew F on the wings with Joseph N in the middle behind Jack as a lone striker.

The match started with Scotton pressure from the off with good play from Lew F to Jack; bringing a save from the Ripley keeper. Tom M and Joseph then pressed and again the in form Ripley keeper denied Scotton taking an early lead. Ripley then cleared long, a slight initial fumble from Ethan saw the ball bobble free but Ripley couldn't capitalise. Ripley came again but a strong tackle from from Lew D stopped the break and Lew F cleared for a corner. From this corner Ethan again needed all his height to tip the in-swinging ball over the bar. The remainder of the half was frantic, with Lew F hitting a strike into the side netting, Tom having an effort saved and James H having to thwart a number of Ripley break-aways from their long-kicking keeper.

Half time, 0-0, and the coaches wanted to change a few things around to try and see if we could provide more support to Jack up front. Charlie and Frankie came on in place of Lew F and Tom M on the wings.

Almost straight from the restart Scotton got a free kick in a dangerous position but Josephs strike went wide. However he wasn't to be beaten. Next corner Jack worked a short one to Joseph who took one touch and hit a right foot which the keeper couldn't keep out. 1-0 Scotton; sharp thinking and a great strike - just like in training.

At the other end of the pitch Joseph & Frankie were needed with some strong tackles in defense as Ripley - unbeaten in their 'Game 1' matches all season - looked for an equaliser. Ripley got what they where after from a great corner and an even better volley. 1-1, 5 minutes left and game on.

Joseph took a knock and had to go off - replaced by Lew F. Scotton continued to play their football with some nice 1-2s between Frankie and Jack which lead to a corner. Charlie swung the ball in from the left which Lew D met with a perfectly timed header. 2-1, the crowd go wild... can the boys keep going? More than hold on, the boys went looking for another with a run from Frankie seeing him shot just wide. In the final minute, the boys kept tight to their roles with James H ensuring that Ripley were allowed no more attacks on Ethans goal. Final whistle 2-1 and a well deserved, hard fought win.

Game 2 started James T go in goal, James E and Alexander at the back, Joel, Tom and Lew F across the middle and James C in the strikers role (our now famous 2-3-1 system). The boys started well, with Alexander finding a lot of space and going on a mazy run that brought a good save from Ripleys keeper. Lew F then saw his strike saved and James C had the ball nipped from his toes just as he was about to pull the trigger. The breakthrough must come... More pressure led to a corner taken by Tom M. A great delivery saw James C stoop to nod the ball home and put the boys 1-up. Joel and the midfield continued to press, with support and strength from Alexander, but James E was called on to stop a couple of break-aways from Ripley. Alexander was still making great lung-busting runs from the back, again bringing good saves from Ripley on two more occasions. His rewards finally came from another burst forward and a low strike... 2-0.
Scotton weren't finished in the half yet, with Lew F battling three defenders before shooting wide and Tom M with some great control and again unlucky to shoot wide.
Half time - 2-0 and a 'quiet' half in goal for James T.

For the second half James came outfield with Tom M taking the keepers jersey. Frankie came on for Lew F in the middle, James C dropped to midfield and Charlie played upfront. The boys started as they left off, with a defense splitting pass from the back from Alexander to James C who just missed with his finish. James T was called on to tackle back and the Frankie denied what would have been almost a certain Ripley goal with some more strong tackling in his own penalty area. The boys then showed smart passing and composure with Alexander, James C and James T, who slid the ball through to Charlie who slammed home his first of the day and our third. 3-0. Joseph came back onto the field for the last 3 minutes and straight away danced through the middle, finding Charlie who neatly took the chance. 4-0 and now all the boys - including Tom in goal, were trying their luck from all over the pitch. Frankie, played in by James E had a great strike saved, Charlie tried for his hat-trick but the keeper gathered and James C also saw his strike smothered. As the final whistle approached we were left a bit short at the back and Tom M had to make a smart save to keep a clean sheet. Full time and 4-0.

Every single one of the boys played exceptionally well against what are always a strong Ripley side. We proved that the 5-0 loss at their plays was 'just one of those days' and todays performances where more like how we can play. For `Game 1 the coaches felt it would be unfair to single out any one individual player for MOTM as they all performed really well as a team. In Game 2 (and i guess also for his performance in Game 1) the MOTM went to Lew F who showed both skill and commitment in equal measure and when with the captains armband led and directed the team excellently.

Well done to all the team and the supporters -special thanks to Jo Callis for 'shirt duty' this week. More matches next Saturday away vs Tockwith - which will give us the chance again to try a few people in new positions..

Sat 21 Jan - U6, 7, 9, 10, 11 at Percy Fields for Games

Just a not to remind parents that on Sat 21 all boys APART from out U8s (so thats U6, 7, 9, 10 and 11) are to play at Percy Fields vs Ripley. PLease arrive 830am for warm ups and drill before games.

Boys Back Training Sat Jan 7 - Weather permiting

With all the rain we have had we will have a ground inspection late on Friday - if you DONT heare anything to the contrary - we will be on!

The 8's v 9's - The Rematch!

A chilly, frosty Saturday morning - not one for the faint hearted, saw the return fixture between Scottons 8s and 9s with the younger ones looking to prove a point and show how they had developed from their clashes earlier in the season.

Game 1, and the 9's mixed things around with positions, with, for instance Joseph N in goal and, Jack S in defence and James H taking a turn with the striking boots. The 8's were playing in their usual formation and were looking for a strong performance from the whole squad.

The match started brightly as the sun came out, but both teams were finding it hard to control the ball on the hard ground - and a few tumbles just went to prove to the boys that it was no day for sliding tackles.

The 9s were trying to get their passing game going but a tenacious U8s team were well drilled and playing with great commitment. Some great tackling by Ennis M and Jack H thwarted several of the 9's attacks and 8's pressure was rewarded with a string of corners that they were unable to convert.

It took until nearly half time until the 9's made possession count with birthday-boy James H being in the right place to stroke home the ball to give the 9's a slim 1-0 halftime lead.

Changes at half time (to ensure none of the boys got cold) disrupted any impetus the 9's may have - that and some more great play from the 8s who were showing some fabulous application and no little skills - only matched by the 9's defensive play. Jacob K looked strong in goal for the 8's and made several brave saves whilst Sam H and Jonny H were unlucky not to score an equaliser after some great team play.

For the remainder of the half, the two teams produced some great end to end football and there could have been more goals. However defences held on (including a cracking block by the ear of Ben R) and the match finished with the score still 1-0.

A fiercely contested game which the 8's could be very proud of keeping the game so tight.

Game 2 and again the 9s were all change all over the pitch. The 8's switched a few around and the ground was starting to soften just a little. The 9s coaches pushed the ever-reliable goal poacher Jack S up front and it wasn't long before he was feeding of the runs from midfield to nudge home 2 goals before half time. The 8's defence was being overrun and only strong tackling from the midfield and defence prevented the 9's from scoring more.

In the second half, a few tackles and tumbles saw Joseph have to go off injured but the 9's continued their possession and pressure - as well as this season trick of sharing the goals around - with both Charlie and James C hitting the back of the net before the final whistle. Callum H was having some success on the left for the 8's and only some good goalkeeping stopped the 8's from scoring a deserved goal. A final score of 4-0 had seen the 9's take advantage of being that bit bigger and the 8's tiring a little, but all boys gave each other a great 'three cheers' at the end of a morning where all knew they had been in a game.

For the U9's - match 1 MOTM went to the boy who scored the decisive goal on his birthday - James H. In match 2 the MOTM went to Joel M who - when some where struggling a little with the conditions seemed to thrive and be everywhere on the pitch. It was brilliant to see how much the U8's have developed as a squad so far this year and how they stood up for themselves against the bigger players. Man of the day was a tough decision as there were 5 or 6 players who could have received it. The judges gave it to Sam H for his box to box running and clever passing.

Well done to all boys (and Parents/Guardians) - have a great Christmas, a well deserved rest and we will see you all fresh on Jan 7 for training and the second half of the season.

Under 8s Battle Back v Tockwith Away

A cold and blustery Saturday saw the Under 8’s play Tockwith in an eagerly awaited match. The sides had been evenly matched earlier in the season and it was anticipated that this would be another close game.

The first match saw Scotton start positively with some determined runs by Sam H and Jonny H from the midfield putting the home defence under pressure. The team gradually started to control possession and some good interplay involving Jacob K could have resulted in the opening goal but a brave save from the Tockwith keeper kept the score at 0-0. The opposition looked dangerous on the break and we needed to rely on some smart defending from Ennis M to ensure that we didn’t go behind. A couple of shots from the Tockwith forwards were easily dealt with by Jacob C in goal. Scotton continued to dominate the possession and flowed forward at every opportunity only to find that they were continually thwarted by great keeping and brave defending from Tockwith. The pressure could have easily lead to Scotton being a couple of goals up by half time but it was not to be and the game remained goalless at half time.

The second half carried on in the same vein. Jonny H had a shot saved, Sam H had a couple of chances and Antony S could have had a goal. On one occasion, they were four boys all trying to score in a goal mouth scramble only for Tockwith to clear the ball to safety.

As the match drew to a close it looked as though it was likely to be a 0-0 draw until a cracking shot from a Tockwith player flew past Jacob to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. From the restart Scotton tried to find an equaliser but, despite several good chances, Tockwith held on to win 1-0.

The second match followed a similar pattern with the Scotton boys working hard to win possession and they tried to dominate but, on occasions, the final pass went astray. Shots were deflected for corners on many occasions. From one of these corners, Tockwith broke quickly and moved the ball the length of the field and one of their players finished well to put them 1-0 again.Yet again the boys battled straight from the restart. Callum H was having some success on the left wing and looked like creating the equaliser. Ben R played an excellent ball across the box to Jonny H whose shot was, yet again, blocked by the Tockwith defence. Half time:1-0

The second half saw some big improvements – passes started to go to feet and the boys started to talk to each other. Freddie D looked dangerous on the right and the pressure continued to build on the Tockwith defence. Finally after some good work by the midfield, Jacob K finished with aplomb to get the score back to 1-1.

Ennis and Tom J were doing well at the back and when they won possession they used it well, releasing Sam H and Callum on several occasions. Antony S nearly scored again after a powerful run from the half way line and Tockwith survived another goal line scramble. With time running out it looked like we would have to settle for draw until Jacob K scored a second after a neat move involving four of the team. Some interesting goal celebrations were then shown by the boys.

Final Score: 2-1 to Scotton!

It was pleasing to see the way that the boys battled for each other in both matches and, if we had been a bit better at finishing there could have been more goals – maybe that will be part of the next training session! The ‘Player of the Day’ top was awarded to Antony S for his determined tackling, his energy and his box to box running.

Sat Nov 26 - U9s battle to wins v Hampsthwaite&Birstwith

On a day more reminiscent of football from the 70's - grey sky, spitting rain, whistling wind and a boggy pitch - Scottons 9s took to the field against Hampsthwaite looking to continue form that has seen them lose only once so far this season.

Game 1 saw a starting 7 of Ethan I in goal, James H and Lewis D at the back, across the middle from left to right was Joseph N, James E and Tom M and lone striker up from was Lewis F.

A frantic opening saw the boys get away to the best start with Joseph lashing the ball in inside the first couple of minutes to take us one up. Hamsthwaite though had more than enough tenacity and it was clear that the boys would be in for a battle. Lewis F hen stung the keepers hands before James H and Tom M combined down the flank to win a corner which this time led to nothing. Hamsthwaite came again and Lewis D needed to be sharp to block a free kick. A few Scotton attacks were breaking down in the mud - passing rather than dribbling would be the best tactic an a reat 3-way attack from Joseph, Lewis F and James E needed a fine save by the on-fire Hamps keeper to keep the score 0-1 at half time.

A couple of half time changes saw Alexander come in to the middle to give James E a rest and Lewis F and Jack S swap the striker role. Stright from the kick off Joseph found Jack who saw a smart shot saved. Scotton pressed hard and a James H pass right down the line released Joseph again to square to Jack - but the ball was nipped from his toe. Pressure was mounting and a with Tom winning a corner through some great resiliance - some great quick thinking between Jack and Joseph while Hamps were organising saw a short corner taken and Joseph struck the ball cleanly into the net before most knew what was happening. 0-2.

Jack, Alexander and Lewis D had shots saved and then the home side got their reward for some battling play - the ball squirming out of Ethans grip in the wet and dribbling over the line.1-2 game on. Scotton kept composed and attacked again. Alexander and Jack saw a break snuffed out and Jopeph again shot wide. At this point - James H took a heavy knock to the knee and needed to be replaced with Frankie. Another effort from Joseph was too stong for the keeper who could only block and this time Alexander was on hand to prod home his first and Scottons third. 1-3. The last minutes were an end to end affair with Ethan saving well and Frankie being called on for defensive duties to break up a number of H&B moves. The final whistle went and Scotton could be really pleased to have ground out a 3-1 win.

Game 2 rang the changes with Alexander in goal - a back two of Josh F and James E, across the middle was James C, Frankie and James T with Joel the lone striker. From the kick-off Frankie showed his strength and gave the boys a great start by smashing home the first. 0-1. The ball was moving around well in tricky conditions, with James E, James T and Frankie linking up with James C who saw his strike saved. The H&B clearance caught the boys by suprise and - light at the back from the previous attack Hampsthwaite levelled. 1-1. Scotton needed to gain control of the game again to keep a revitalised H&B under control. The boys were trying hard to get their noses back in front; Joel hit the post and then forced a save and Frankie got in a pin-point cross that James C only just failed to smuggle in. More pressure saw James T hit the post. However Scotton were nearly caight light at the back again and Alexander needed to make a save which Josh then calmly cleared. The half was coming to a close and a break by James T drew a foul mid-way in the H&B half. James T took the kick himself and guided a great strike into the top corner. Half time - and the bys had got their noses in front again - 1-2.

Half time saw a few more changes with James T taking a turn in goal an Jack took his role of the wing. Lewis F took over at the back from James E. The half kicked off and Josh and Lewis needed to be aware with good tackles to keep H&B out. Their clearance from defense broke to Joel who - one and one with the keeper - saw his strong shot well saved, Frankie was covering the field but tiring and so James H was brought on to freshen things up. He immediately had an attempt saved and then linked well with Jack who just missed. Pressure was mounting and it was only a matter of time with Hamsthwaite tiring in the testing conditions. A one-two from Jack and James H allowed James C to be found in space to finish well and for Scotton to gain that bit of breathing space - 1-3. Almost straight from the centre off - Scotton then got the game sewn up with another snap shot and goal from Joel - 1-4. Hamps showed spirit and continued to attack when they had the chance - striking the foot of the post from a corner. The final couple of minutes saw Lewis F get his name on the scoresheet - deserved for his tireless running - getting on the end of a move from James C and James H. A few changes saw Josh go upfront for the final 3 minutes and Ethan get an outfield run out - and he very nearly scored with the final kick of the games. Final whistle - 1-5 - and well deserved - if bruising couple of victories that the boys could be proud of.

MOTM for game 1 went to Joseph N for both his goals and in trying ton continue to play his football despite the conditions. The 2nd MOTM went to James E who took some heavy challenges but always picked himself up and got right back about his work eiether in the middle or at the back. But in such tricky conditions all the boys should be very pleased with themselves.

Under 10’s Boys v Boroughbridge Blues – Saturday 26th November 2011

Illness to some of the squad meant Scotton travelled to Boroughbridge Blues with a small but determined group of players looking to get another good result in the Harrogate & District Development League.

The coaches had to revamp the starting 7 due to the absence of Elliot, Michael and Christopher; Liam was selected in goal; Harry and Ben in defence; Tom and Daniel in midfield and a front two of Jack and George.

The game started with Scotton playing with a strong and blustery wind behind them and it was not long before they used this advantage to fashion an early chance, Tom crossing deep for George whose knock down found Jack and he made no mistake to score a fine goal and make it 1-0 to Scotton.

Scotton were on fire in the early stages, Tom creating a chance down the left which went for a corner, then again down the left George did what he does best, cutting in at the edge of the box to fire in Scotton’s second, 2-0 and the visitors were on top.

Tom then fired in a shot which went over the bar; but it was not long before Tom got on the score sheet, picking the ball up in his own half he broke into the Blues half and unleashed a powerful shot from distance to make it 3-0; again the players using the conditions to great effect.

Scotton were all over the Blues at this stage; George getting a sniff on goal but his shot was saved; then Harry got in the act, a cross / shot from 25 yards out on the left hand side was buried into the top corner with the home goalie given no chance. 4-0 to Scotton and there seemed like only one winner with half time approaching.

The second half kicked off with Jonah replacing Ben in defence and Tom going up front with George as Owen replaced Jack and took the midfield place vacated by Tom. Scotton had a bit of defending to do as the second half got under way, but they broke excellently from a Blues corner; George found himself clear on the left and crossed for Daniel in the middle, only to see it evade Daniel’s outstretched leg.

The blues were showing more attacking intent in the second half as they tried to take advantage of the wind to their backs; Liam was called upon to save well from a good shot. Tom then tried his luck with a shot that went just wide as Scotton struggled with the wind in their faces.

The Blues again created another chance and they looked in on goal only for Daniel to make a fantastic blocking tackle to concede a corner; this was whipped in and only the quick thinking of Liam who tipped over the cross from beneath his crossbar kept the score at 4-0.

The Blues continued to pressure the Scotton defence and before long they had pulled a goal back as the Scotton defence struggled to clear the attack. Scotton did not sit back however, George creating a couple of good chances for Jack then Daniel but the Blues defence held firm. George then saw an excellent shot go just wide as Scotton continued to look for more goals.

At the other end Jonah got in an excellent defensive tackle then Tom blocked a shot as the home team pressed for another goal. With the clock ticking down, George saw a chance go just wide; but there was still time for the Blues to get a second goal as the Scotton defence was put under more pressure. But it was no more than a consolation as the ref blew for full time with Scotton coming out 4-2 winners.

An excellent team effort by all nine squad players made it difficult for the coaches to choose a man of the match but Harry just shaded it for his excellent defensive play; long throw-ins and a fantastic long range goal.

Game 2 started with Daniel in goal, Jonah and Ben in defence; Tom and Owen in midfield with Jack and Liam up front.

Again Scotton started with the wind to their backs and tried to take advantage from the kick off; Tom saw a shot which was heading for the back of the net hit the defender and loop up on to the bar and over.

Tom then peppered the Blues goal with three shots all of which were saved as the home goalie looked on top of his game. Tom then headed just wide from a corner as Scotton started to get frustrated at being unable to turn their pressure into goals.

Liam then tried to get into the act, shooting well but again the goalie was equal to it and saved low down; Liam then won a corner with an excellent break down the left; the corner was cleared but the ball found its way to Tom who unleashed a shot from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 to Scotton.

The Blues then tried their luck but Daniel was equal to the challenge saving well to his right. At the other end Tom was jinking through the Blues defence before being pulled down at the edge of the box; he picked himself up and fired the free kick just wide. With the half time whistle approaching, Tom then tried his luck from the half way line, again using the blustery conditions only to see the ball go just wide of the goal; Liam then had a shot which went just wide. Half Time 1-0 to Scotton.

The Blues had the wind behind them in the second half and they started off brightly testing Ben who had replaced Daniel at Half time in the nets; there was nothing he could do when the next shot came in as the Blues equalised and then with their next attack they made it 2-1 as it looked as though Scotton’s inability to get more goals in the first half might prove to be costly.

George then came on for Jack and Tom for Owen as the coaches looked to push for an equaliser; despite playing with the wind in their faces the Scotton players rolled up their sleeves and went to attack the Blues goal; Harry saw a shot go just wide as the play moved in the Blues half; George then created three chances from just outside the box in quick succession as Scotton pushed for an opening, but George was denied by some good keeping, and the Blues defence held firm; Liam then tried his luck but again the keeper saved well but conceded a corner. Liam whipped this in and found Tom’s head but his glancing header went agonisingly wide of the post.

That was the last chance for Scotton and the whistle went with the Blues winning 2-1. All the players again put in an excellent shift; even when they went 2-1 down their heads did not drop; picking a man of the match was another difficult task for the coaches but Jonah deserved the accolade for an excellent defensive display.

Under 8s Battle in the sunshine v Hampsthwaite

Saturday 19th November saw the next fixture for the Under 8 squad – an away trip to Hampsthwaite and Birstwith.

From the kick off the opponents put us under pressure immediately with some good runs from their midfielders and some powerful shots. Jacob C made a couple of smart saves in the first few minutes but despite his heroics, Hampsthwaite quickly took a 3-0 lead as a result of some smart finishing (and over enthusiastic defending from us!). To their credit, the lads kept battling and were rewarded when some smooth passing involving Ennis Mac and Jonny H led to Sam H running clear from the half way line. His powerful shot from the edge of the box flew into the net via the far post – a stunning finish to an excellent move! All the lads got stuck in and solid defending from Ennis, Freddie D and Tom J – who battled on despite getting a knock on his knee. Jonny H looked dangerous whenever he had the ball and with a bit more luck, the scoreline at half time could have easily been 3-3 instead of 3-1.

The second half saw Scotton make a few changes with Jack H and Callum H coming on to bolster the defence whilst Antony S was asked to try to dominate the midfield. The lads continued to battle and kept on thwarting the opposition with some determined blocking and tackling and in particular there were big improvements in the boys ability to mark the opposition which led to a couple of routines that would have looked at home on Strictly Come Dancing!

The strength of the opposition started to show however and their tactic of playing one man well upfront was reward when they scored three goals near the end of the match. Final score 6-1.

The opposition fielded a different team in the second match. A tactical switch led to Freddie D going into goal and he was kept busy throughout the match. A couple of great saves kept the score at 0-0. Some great defending from Jack, Callum and Antony resulted in a series of goal line scrambles which somehow Scotton managed to win and clear the ball. However, the pressure finally told when a shot from Hampsthwaite somehow squirmed between Freddie’s legs. Further defensive scrambles followed and a goal line clearance from Ben R kept the score at 1-0 and each time the opponents looked like scoring they were thwarted by a last ditch tackle or sliding block.

Hampsthwaite increased their lead when a well struck shot went into the corner of the net and at this point it seemed like the flood gates might open. However, yet again the lads dug deep and started to win the midfield battle. Jack was winning the 50-50 balls and Callum was having an impact on the wing and as a result of a strong tackle from Jack and a pass from Callum, Jonny H finished well to pull one back for Scotton. Further Scotton pressure should have resulted in more goals as the boys flowed forward with Sam, Jonny, Callum and Ennis all going close. However the score stayed at 2-1 until Hampsthwaite scored a third with a low shot. Final score: 3-1

Credit to all of the boys (and parents!) for their determination and stamina. Antony S had his best game for the club, Sam scored the goal of the season and Freddie resembled Gordon Banks at his best! It must have been hard to choose Man of the Day but, after much discussion, it was awarded to Ennis Mac for his great defending and attacking runs throughout.

Well done to all the boys.

Scotton Scorchers U10's v Boroughbridge Whites

The sun greeted us as Scotton 10’s took on Boroughbridge Whites

The first match started, Scotton defended strongly with some good passing skills and it was no surprise that there was an early attempt by Scotton, but with a strong defense Boroughbridge Whites were not prepared to allow an early goal.

BW’ s pressed ahead on the attack and some strong good passing by Jonah and Michael saw some early nice touches from Scotton as they pushed forward with the ball. There was some good ball play by George and a throw in by Matt, gave a great chance to Scotton but a big gap in attack meant Scotton spurned some good early opportunities . The ball was soon intercepted by BW who kept it in play and drove it down towards Scotton’s goal, which lead to a well constructed early lead by BW. 0-1. Scotton were keen to remain positive and were soon back on the attack and this culminated in a nice shot from George towards the centre of the BW‘s goal was but this well saved by BW’s keeper. BW worked hard controlling the ball keeping controlled possession and with a good surging run any hopes of scoring a second goal in the 1st half was dashed by a brilliant save from Liam from a powerful long-range effort. HT 0-1

The second half started with purpose and lively opening exchanges by both teams. Scotton were determined to make their mark and good passing by Owen and Jonah to Michael put pressure on BW. This was a great second half with some impressive passing by Max, George and Josh. Sam got control of the ball and took his chance firing a shot at the goal but this was wide of the net. Liam in goal produced some good saves to keep the score down. Scotton were passing well but an interception of the ball by BW drove it into the Scotton’s end. There was some good defending from Ben and Jack. Jack took a corner but the ball curved into the side of the netting. BW drove the ball forward but got a corner which was the opportunity they needed to make the final score 0:2.

The second game started well with good passing from Christopher and Liam. An early spurt from BW put pressure on Scotton but an outstanding save from Ben stopped an early goal. Scotton again pushed forward with Liam’s running attack. Jack attempted a shot at the goal. The ball was quickly back in BW’s control and a shot by BW saw an early lead in the first half. 0-1. A further attack by BW was nicely stopped by Ben. Half time. 0-1.

The second half saw some good defending by Christopher but after 1 minute of the second half BW netted a second goal. 0-2. There was some good interception by Liam and a good tackle by Josh meant that Scotton gained control of the ball with some flowing moves. A further attack by BW made the score 0:3. With some good cross play by Jack, Sam and Christopher Scotton had again control of the ball. Christopher then took a chance and drilled the ball into the top left corner of the net making the score 1:3. With this boost to Scotton George ran down the wing with a good cross play to Liam who scored a brilliant goal 2:2. Despite Scotton providing strong opposition another goal was scored by BW before the final whistle BB making the final score 2:4.

Despite the score Scotton were strong in opposition with every player performing at their best. Well done to all the player’s for a fantastic performance against a very good team.

Under 11 Boy's Match Report v Kirkby Malzeard Lions – Saturday 12 November 2011

Heavy overnight rain was not enough to put paid to this fixture although it proved to be tough going for the players as they hosted Kirkby Malzeard Lions at a wet and muddy Percy Fields.

With a couple of players unavailable, the coaches started with Cameron in goal; David and Wilf in defence; a midfield trio of Darren, Oliver and Tom with Callum as the lone striker.

Scotton started the game brightly with Tom finding Darren with an excellent ball whose shot was well saved by the visiting keeper. Kirkby were expected to be tough opposition and it proved correct when they created their first chance of the game which Cameron saved well; with both sides sizing each other up, Scotton made the breakthrough, Darren finding Callum in space who lashed the ball into the net, 1-0 to Scotton.

The lead was short lived however as the Lion’s came straight back at Scotton, a fierce shot from distance almost broke the net to make it 1-1. Scotton did not let their heads drop however and Tom fired in a shot which was well saved as the game went from end to end. Wilf then found Callum whose shot was blocked; Scotton then forced a couple of corners as they put the visitors under pressure.

With the game evenly matched Kirkby then took the lead with another fierce shot as the hosts struggled to deal with some powerful running from midfield. 2-1 to Kirkby and Scotton were on the back foot.

Callum almost created an immediate reply with a shot which was deflected and fizzed just over the bar; this led to three corners in a row but Scotton could not force the ball in despite some good quality crosses into the box. Kirkby again hit Scotton on the break, another powerful run from midfield which the home defence did not pick up led to a third cracking shot of the game, 3-1 to the visitors and Scotton had it all to do. As half time approached Tom again tried his luck with a shot which the visiting keeper saved well. Half time 3-1 to Kirkby and the coaches made a change with Brad coming on for Oliver in midfield.

Scotton started the second half well, again Callum then Darren went close with shots which were well saved, but again Kirkby hit them on the break to make it 4-1. The game was drifting away from Scotton but the players kept on plugging away, David getting forward from the back helped force another three corners in succession but despite some good delivery Kirkby held firm.

Tom then saw two shots well saved as Scotton pushed forward in search of goals; Tom then played Callum in with an excellent through ball but with the keeper rushing out and Callum’s shot went agonisingly wide. The coaches made a couple of changes as Harry and Elliot came on with Tom picking up a knock. Harry was only on the pitch a couple of minutes when he fired in a lovely shot to make it 2-4, but with the clock ticking down Scotton could not find another goal and the game ended with Kirkby the winners 4-2. It was a tough game for Scotton against strong opposition, but the lads kept plugging away, man of the match was a close run thing but Callum edged it with a wonderful goal in the first half.

After a short break the second game kicked off with David going in goal; Darren and Elliot at the back, Tom, Harry and Callum in midfield with Cameron and Wilf up front.

Scotton did not appear to have a hangover from the first game as Callum continued his good form in front of goal firing in a fine effort to make it 1-0 to Scotton. Kirkby then created a couple of chances themselves as the game went from one end to the other, David saving well from one shot. Callum then almost got a second but his shot was blocked and cleared for a corner. From the retake Cameron had an effort saved and Scotton forced another corner. Kirkby then broke downfield but David again did well to keep the ball out with a well timed save.

Tom, having recovered from a knock in the first game then set up Cameron with an excellent dribble through the heart of midfield, Cameron lashed the ball home and Scotton extended their lead to 2-0.

Kirkby recovered quickly however and after some pressure they pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. Scotton did not let this set back affect them, Tom whipped in a shot which was well saved then from a long Harry throw in; Wilf found Cameron whose shot hit the back of the net to make it 3-1 to Scotton.

Scotton had the initiative now and Callum, Cameron then Tom all had shots which were well saved; from a corner a Kirkby defender almost put through his own goal as the ball fizzed over the bar; Cameron then fired in a chance as Scotton tried to extend the lead. Just before half time they did just that, as Tom yet again created a chance from midfield, played in Callum with an excellent ball and Callum got his second of the game to make it 4-1.

As half time approached Harry then tried an audacious shot from 30 yards out which went just over the bar; the half time whistle blew with Scotton 4-1 ahead and looking good for the lead with Darren and Elliot having marshalled the Scotton defence superbly denying Kirkby any space in the first half.

Wilf took over from David in goal for the second half and he was called straight into the action, with a fantastic double save to deny Kirkby. Tom then had two chances to extend the lead, both shots were well saved, Callum then played Tom in and again the goalie saved, denying Tom a goal.

Tom then found Brad with a good ball, who in turn found Cameron who finished well to make it 5-1 to Scotton and an excellent hat trick from Cameron.

At this point the game seemed over but Kirkby had other ideas, as they did in the first game they started to attack the Scotton defence with real purpose and in quick succession pulled the game back to 5-4; at this point the lads were hanging on with everyone back in the Scotton half defending for their lives; with time ticking away Brad then broke forward and caught Kirkby light at the back, as he fired in the shot it went agonisingly wide but it was enough to take the pressure of the Scotton defence and the full time whistle went with Scotton holding on for a 5-4 victory.

This was another tough game with all the players contributing to an excellent match, Cameron got a well deserved man of the match award for a wonderful hat trick which ultimately won the game for Scotton.

Scotton 9s v Kirby Malzeard - Sat 12 Nov - Match reports.

Saturday brought bright sunshine but a squidgy pitch at Percy Fields as Scotton9s took on Kirbys U9s. After the U8s games last week we knoew we would be in for a tough challenge.

Game one saw Ethan in goal, a back two of Lew D and James H, Frankie took the role in the middle with Joseph on the left and James C on the right. Up front Jack led the line.

Scotton started the game brightly, with a corner leading to a header that whistled wide. Scotton wingers got their runs going, with Joseph going close; striking the post and the James C on the other wing having an attempt blocked. Kirby then pressed, only for their attack to be broken up by calm play by James H at the back. Jack was finding space up front and took a great ball in his stride to give the boys a deserved 1-0 lead. Joseph then had a strike saved and then another attack saw Jack get the second - poking the ball home at the far post. Scotton nearly extended their lead; with James C being tackled just as he was about to pull the trigger. The corner was saved and the whistle blew for half time. Ethan had had relatively little to do but had marshalled his defense well to keep a clean sheet.

The first half was all Scotton and there was just a few changes of position saw Lew D push into midfield and Frankie drop to centre half. The second half started fast with Jack so nearly nipping in for his third - the ball just being nipped from his toe at the last second. More good movement from Scotton led to a corner- whipped in by Joseph which Lew D connected with only to see his attempt fly over. Scotton were bossing the game now with some good pass and move football and it was only a matter of time before another breakthrough - with Jack completing his hat trick with another poachers finish. The rest of the boys now wanted to get on the score sheet, with a series of quick fire attempts first from Jospeh and James C which the keeper - who was having a good game - save - and then two from 'Havers' - one just over and one just wide. The corner count to Scotton was racking up but the boys just couldn't find the finish their pressure deserved and the final whistle saw the score stay 3-0. A great attacking performance by the whole team but MOTM went to Jack for holding his position and being in the right place to turn chances into goals.

Game two saw Ethan swap with Alexander who took the keepers jersey. Joel and James E took defensive duty, Tom Manning and Ben Tweed played as wingers with Ethan in the middle. Up front - looking to emulate Jacks hat-trick was Lewis F. Kick off saw the ref slightly behind play due to coffee but with enough of a view to see Kirbys first attack blocked out by Joel for a corner. The boys then got the ball moving, with a quick break from Tom down the wing leading to a corner. James tweed whipped the corner right across the goal but no-one could get the touch needed. Lewis francis then picked up the ball just outside the area and with a quick turn, a few strides and a snap shot saw the ball to fly in and Scotton take a 1-0 lead. Scotton continued to work the wings and shortly after Tom cut in and shot to make it 2-0. Scotton were scoring the goals but Kirby were having their share of the ball - and when they didnt were quick closing down. James Tweed went on a mazy run past three defenders but his cross missed the mark. From the loose ball Kirby broke upfield and defense had to be strong; with James E first in with a strong block and clearance. The last move of the half saw Lew F and James T work well together but they couldn't beat the busy Kirby keeper. Half time and 2-0.

For the second half Alexander took over in the middle with Ethan back between the sticks. Kirby pressed from the whistle, but a god tackle from Joel allowed him to set Tom free but his shot was saved. We then saw the individual dribble of the game with ALexander dancing past at least 4 desparing Kirby challenges to crack his shot in. The keeper looked to have saved well, pushing the ball onto the post. However the ball came back out and Alexander - following up his strike as players always should was first to react to poke home the ball- a well deserved goal from his individual skill. The score was 3-0 but Kirby seemed to find a second wind =- putting the boys under some considerable pressure which saw the boys lose a little bit of their shape and composure. Kirby's work all morning was finally rewarded when then hit the net to make it 3-1 - and this goal really spurred them on and saw Scotton holding on a little and struggling to keep the ball. Ethan had to make two exceptional close range saves - really getting his body behind the ball well. As the match came to the end the boys finally got out of their own half and Tom saw a great effort well saved again by the Kirby keeper. The final whistle and 3-1. Scotton had to dig in at the end and everyone played their part. MOTM for game 2 went to James T for both his positioning and his skills on the ball.

Well done to all the boys and big thanks to the supporters (and Michelle for taking kit clean duties again!)

Saturday 12 Nov games v Kirby. Change in KO time

Rain doesn't stop great play as Scotton 8s take on Kirby Malzeard

Scotton Scorchers 8s v Kirby Malzeard - Match Reports; Sat Nov 5

Saturday 5th November saw Scotton Scorchers U8’s play a home fixture against Kirkby Malzeard. A player shortage meant that we had to ask the Under 9s to donate a couple of players to the team and the squad consisted of 7 Under 8 players and 4 Under 9s.

The first match saw Kirkby play some decent football, with their midfield dominating the match. However, determined defending from Ennis Mackensie and Callum Healey kept the visitors at bay until a clearing header fell to a Kirby midfielder who rifled a long distance shot to put them into the lead. Further pressure from Kirkby could have led to more goals but for some good saves from Jacob Cardani between the posts. Scotton looked dangerous on the break and Sam Hutchinson and Tom Manning always looked capable of bringing the Scorchers back into the game through their powerful running and Scotton gradually started to win the midfield battle.

Half time saw a couple of changes to the team and after the restart there was some excellent passing and moving from Scotton. Sam H started to boss the midfield and he combined well with the skilful Joseph Navier and James Haveron to put pressure of the Kirkby defence. This pressure eventually told when Sam calmly finished a flowing move which involved most of the Scotton team. Jack Howells and Antony Sibanda looked dangerous on the break and the Kirkby defence did well to withstand the pressure. Despite many attempts on goal, the score remained 1-1 until the final whistle.

In the second match, the persistent rain meant that frequent substitutions would be needed to ensure that the lads stayed warm! Freddie Dooley took over the goal keeping duties and started off making a couple of stops from Kirkby who started the match well. Two quick goals from Kirkby were reward for their passing game and it looked as though it would be tough to turn the game around especially when the score remained at 2-0 at half time. However, in the second half the lads continued to battle and gradually started to exert themselves on the opposition with Sam and Jack really dominating the midfield. Freddie Dooley was now upfront and had a chance to pull a goal back but his shot was blocked by a defender. Another flowing move saw Sam H score his second of the day to pull a goal back for Scotton and then very quickly Jack finished well with a powerful shot to bring the score back to 2-2. The continuing rain meant that the conditions were deteriorating rapidly but the boys kept trying to play football with Sam excelling in the centre of the pitch. Joseph and James continued to trouble the opposition defence and Scotton could have (and were unlucky not too) scored a winning goal. However a draw was a fair result and was a fair reflection of the match.

Well done to all the boys (and the supporters who stayed and cheered despite the rain) for a battling performance. Week by week they are improving and starting to show an understanding of how easy this game can be when you let the ball do the work. The man of the day award was awarded to Sam Hutchinson for his all round performance and two goals although all the other lads were praised for their performances.

Under 10’s Boys v Wetherby JFC Match Report Saturday 29 October 2011

The Under 10’s boy’s squad hosted Wetherby JFC at Percy Fields for the latest round of Harrogate & District Development League fixtures on Saturday. Despite half term we still had a good turnout of players to select from.

The first game kicked off with Liam in goal, Harry and Max in defence; Elliot and Jack in central midfield with Tom operating just behind the front two of Cameron and George. Scotton started brightly and it wasn’t long before George created the first chance of the game, shooting just wide of the Wetherby goal. George then created an excellent opening from the left hand side, firing in a dangerous cross which eluded everyone.

It was all Scotton in the early exchanges and they went 1-0 ahead when Tom ghosted past 2 defenders and fired into the net. Scotton continued to take the game to the visitors, Tom found Cameron with an excellent ball, and Cameron then played it to George who lashed in Scotton’s second, 2-0 to the hosts. Again Scotton kept up the pressure, Cameron hitting the post from 15 yards out, Cameron and George then exchanged passes and found Tom whose shot was saved.

After another period of pressure which saw Tom shoot wide from a corner; Tom then found George on the right wing and with great anticipation George saw an opening by the right hand post and lashed the shot in to make it 3-0 to Scotton. Still Scotton continued to create chances as the visitors found it difficult to get out of their own half, and when they did Max and Harry swept up efficiently and linked up play with the forwards and midfield.

Jack then found himself in a good position; his shot was blocked and cleared by the visiting goalie. Tom then saw a shot saved and go for a corner; which was fired in by Harry to George; again his shot was on target but was well saved. As half time approached Max and Elliot were alert to a rare Wetherby break which was cleared and the ref blew for half time with the score 3-0 to Scotton.

Scotton started the second half as they finished the first forcing three early corners as they looked to put the game beyond Wetherby. Tom and Cameron then exchanged passes as Tom’s shot went just wide. Tom then saw a shot cleared off the line only for it to fall to Harry who blasted it in the net to make it 4-0.

George continued to lead the line well and found himself with a chance down the left, cutting in and firing in a cracking goal to make it 5-0 and a hat trick for George! Max continued to sweep up at the back as Scotton controlled the game, he found Tom in space down the right and Tom’s shot was well saved. From the corner the ball found its way to Elliot who shot from the edge of the box only for the goalie to save well.

With time running out, Harry and Jack had further chances to extend the lead only to see their shots blocked by Wetherby defenders and George rounded off an excellent display picking up the ball from Tom and firing home to make it 6-0 to Scotton at full time. An excellent all round performance for all eight players in particular George who bagged four goals!

Game 2 started with the coaches making a few changes, Cameron started in goal, Elliot and Ben in defence, Max and Owen in midfield with Harry operating just in front of them with Jack and Liam up front.

Scotton started the game on the front foot, creating an early chance for Harry whose shot went just wide. The visitors however were seeing more of the ball in the second game and Max had to be alert to block a shot which was heading for goal. Soon after however the visitors went 1-0 in front as their pressure started to show.

Max and Harry were in great form defending the Scotton goal as Wetherby got up a head of steam in the Scotton half, Max stopping a three onto one attack and then further attacks from both flanks. Cameron was then called into action saving well from another Wetherby attack as Scotton continued to be pushed back into their own half.

Further pressure from Wetherby came soon after and they scored twice in quick succession to make it 3-0 as Scotton continued to be put under pressure from the Wetherby attack which was in full flow; half time came with Wetherby 3-0 ahead and the coaches made a change bringing Cameron out of goal, replacing him with Ben.

The second half started the same as the first ended with Wetherby taking the game to the hosts and it was not long before they made it 4-0 as Scotton struggled to control the game. Up field Harry and Liam exchanged passes as they tried to create an opening and after some further pressure Scotton finally got their reward as Cameron fired home to make it 4-1.

Scotton then started to dominate play, Liam, Harry and Cameron all saw shots blocked and then Max fired one just over the bar as Scotton pushed for a second. Liam then tried his luck from distance; his shot was well saved as Scotton continued to take the game to Wetherby.

With the clock ticking down Wetherby then hit Scotton on the break with an incisive counter attack to make it 5-1 and with time almost up Liam went on an excellent run through the Wetherby defence only for his shot to be well saved. The ref then blew for full time, 5-1 to Wetherby, the visitors picked themselves up well from the first game but all the Scotton players worked hard and were a little unfortunate that their pressure in the second half was not rewarded with further goals.

Sat 22 Oct - Scotton 9s v Scotton 8s - Age outwits youthful energy in the inter-club clash.

Saturday saw the first of the years inter-club clashes and the 9s and 8s boys faced each other at Percy Fields.Scotton 8s, missing a few due to half-term fielded a strong opening 7 against Scotton 9s who mixed things around a bit from the normal team orders.

Game 1The first game starting at a blistering pace with the U9s Jack Sherwin, starting up front, quickly stabbed home the opener; 1-0. The 8's broke quickly down the field and it took a great save from James Tweed in goal to keep the 8's out. The end to end stuff continued with a speculative shot from Tom M whistling over the bar. U9's pressure told with Charlie M-I grabbing his first and the 9'st second from the edge of the area. Charlie pounced again on the end of a great passing move that started all the way from the back, only for the 8's again to keep James awake in goal with a smart shot that needed a strong save. Jack tuned provider next, going down the wing and crossing for Charlie to grab his third before Jacob, in goal for the 8s saved well from Lewis Dobson before in one final break before half time Lewis D fired wide.

HT: 4-0

In the second half the U8s came out fired up with instant pressure and a shot just wide. Tom M again took the ball and danced down the wing to strike just wide but it Was James Callis who got the nest goal with a strong run and shot. 5-0. Jon Haase for the 8s was keeping his team mates pumped up and has a shot himself with James Tweed in goal denying another goal. The 8s contijnued to press and for around 5 minutes they controlled the game without managing the breakthrough. However, the 9's composed themselves and were patient, with James Callis finally steadying the ship, first with a strike that was saved and then grabbing his second to make it 6-0. The U8's weren't finished and showed some great spirit and team work that will see them well as they grow as a team. Callum ? (no6 on the day) broke down the field to slot home a goal for the 8s - well deserved for all their effort, but as the final whistle approached, James Callis matched Charlie's hat-trick, going on a quick break away and grabbing his third to leave the final result 7-1; a score that while emphatic didn't tell the whole tale.

In Game 2, the 9s were fielding enugh on the day to play a completely fresh side and to stop the 8s becoming too tired they also fielded some of the U9s who played in game 1.

Game 2 saw the U8s continue to put real pressure on the 9s, taking the ball forward and have two efforts on goal seemingly even before the 9's had had a touch. Joseph alleviated a bit of pressure with a great run and shot, only for the 8s to break again and strike the post and then just put the follow up over. The game was even with some good passing from both teams which was great to see. Slowly, the 9s fitness and size started to play a role, with another good run and snap shot from Joseph seeing the 9's take a lead. The 8s came again only to face Josh 'the rock' Fewtrall calm as ever at the back to clear the danger. Lewis Francis then went close before another run from Joseph saw a cross met by Joel to stab home the second. 2-0. Joseph continued his one-man battle to get on the score sheet, first bringing a save and then going just wide and just over with further efforts. James Haveron then ventured forward and saw his long range effort fly just over. Half time, and despite a hat full of effort the 9s only had a 2-0 scoreline to show for it.Could the 8's make them pay?

The second half saw some under9 nerves with a mix up at the back nearly ending up as an own goal. The boys needed that third goal to clam them, and it soon came with another run down the wings from Joseph who put an early ball in for Lewis Francis to volley home a great finish. 3-0. The move was almost repeated a minute later, this time seeing Lewis F edge the ball just wide. Frankie then tried his luck, pressing on and firing just wide, shortly followed by seeing another effort well saved before joseph grabbed his second and the boys 4th. To their credit, the 8s continued to try and play their football and Josh and James were again called upon at the back and in goal to keep them out. A frrekick to the 9s from the edge of the box saw joseph strike the wall and the ball go for a corner. Quick thinking between Joel and Joseph at the corner saw a short one give Joseph the angle to bend one in for his hat trick to make the score 5-0. As the match drew to a close, Frankie got a well deserved goal for his efforts before one final run down the wing and cross from Joseph see Joel meet it perfectly with his head for his second. The final whistle and 7-0; reward for some really positive and attacking play and great finishing.

At the final whistle it was great to see all the boys congratulate each other and that the 8's still had big smiles on their faces. They had given the matches a real go and should be proud.

MOTM for Game 1 went to James Callis for his all round effort as well as dribbling runs from the wings. Game 2 MOTM went to Joel Mannion who was the man in the right place at the right time to grab the goals that capped off some great moves. Well done though to all the boys from both teams who played with some fabulous spirit and skill.

Boys Under 10’s v Pannal Ash - Saturday 15 October 2011

The Under 10’s travelled to Pannal Ash for the second fixture of the season in the Harrogate & District Development League.

The squad was missing a couple of key players this week due to other commitments however the lads were in confident mood as Scotton kicked off with Liam in goal, Elliot and Michael in defence, Jonah and Owen in midfield with George the lone striker supported by Tom the captain for the match operating in a free role in front of the midfield.

The early exchanges were in the middle of the park with both teams sizing each other up; the home side had the first sight on goal which went wide of the post without troubling Liam. George then combined with Tom to fashion a shot for Scotton which whizzed just wide. Tom then peppered the home goal with a couple of rasping shots which were well saved, meanwhile in defence Michael and Elliot were in control as a home attack was sniffed out.

George was looking lively in attack and his shot from the right just went wide of the post as Scotton pressed the home defence. Jonah and Owen were working hard in midfield to stop any Pannal attacks as the game went from one end to the other.

Scotton then took the lead in spectacular fashion, Elliot played a great ball out of defence and found Tom in midfield, his pinpoint pass found George with his back to goal, and turning on a six-pence he left the defender for dead and cracked the ball into the top right hand corner, 1-0 Scotton and an early contender for goal of the season!

Tom then had a chance to extend the lead but his shot was well saved; Pannal then launched another attack and a fierce shot hit the back of the net to make it 1-1. Game on!!

Tom then tested the keeper again with a thunderbolt only to see him turn the ball onto the post and the ball was scrambled out as the half time whistle went, 1-1 and the game was evenly poised. The coach made one change, Josh replacing Jonah in midfield.

The second half started with Scotton on the back foot, and it was not long before the hosts were in the lead, despite Liam’s best efforts the ball hit the back of the net, 2-1 to Pannal. The lad’s heads did not drop however and Scotton’s defence held firm as Pannal tried to extend the lead, Michael and Elliot working hard and supported by Josh and Owen in midfield. As the clock ticked down, George played in Tom whose instinctive shot nestled in the bottom corner as Scotton pulled it back to 2-2 with only minutes to go. Despite trying to go for the winner there were no more goals and the game ended 2-2. An excellent effort by all the players, and the man of the match award went to George for an excellent striking performance which was topped off by a fantastic goal.

Game 2 kicked off with Liam and George swapping places, George, captain for the match taking his place in goal and Jonah replacing Owen in midfield. Pannal started the game brightly and Scotton were immediately on the back foot, Michael and Elliot did well to keep the home side out. It was not long though before Pannal was ahead after firing in from close range, 1-0 Pannal. With Scotton struggling to get at the home defence Pannal attacked the Scotton goal again and made it 2-0. Scotton were not beaten however and the lad’s pulled their socks up and took the game to the hosts, Tom firing in an excellent shot to make it 2-1.

As we approached half time it looked like Scotton were taking control of the game but Pannal created another chance to make it 3-1 as the half time whistle went. Owen came on at half time to replace Jonah and Liam went back in goal allowing George to move back into the striking position.

The change had an immediate effect as Tom played George through to bury the ball into the back of the net, 3-2 and Scotton were back in it. Michael and Elliot were working hard to break up play at the back and Josh and Owen were helping them out but Pannal got a fourth with a fantastic lob shot over Liam who could do nothing about it, 4-2 to Pannal and the game seemed over.

Scotton kept going however and Josh won a corner which he took himself, picking out Tom who powered a header into the net to make it 4-3. With time running out Scotton pushed for an equaliser, Tom had a weaving run beating three defenders before shooting against the post, so close but the ball was cleared. Scotton could not create another chance and eventually the game ended with the home side winning 4-3. Despite this all the players deserved a round of applause for an excellent effort and Michael won the man of the match award for a sterling performance at the back.

The third fixture of the Under 8's season saw them take on Burton Leonard Bullets in an away match. When we arrived the opposition coach informed us that they we would be playing two different teams (each made up of Year 3's and 4's) so we knew that it would be a difficult morning.

The first match started with some end to end football and yet again, the defensive duo of Jack Howells and Ennis Mackensie kept the opposition at bay. However, a speculative shot from a cleared corner flew into the net to give Burton the lead. Scotton nearly hit back straight away when a determined run from Freddie Dooley ended with his shot just missing the post. The older players in Burton Leonard's team started to dominate the midfield and they were able to score a couple more goals in the first half.

After the break Scotton started to play some neat football - they were passing, moving and even starting to organise themselves although their tackling left a bit to be desired at times! Jacob Cardani was kept very busy in goal and was really unlucky when, after making a great save, the ball bounced in off his head! Jonny Haase was combining well with our midfield and kept putting the Burton Leonard defence under pressure and he should have been rewarded with a penalty when a defender chopped him down after Jonny's fancy back heel had put him clean through.
Final score 5-0.

The second match saw Scotton face a different team and keeper Jacob Kavanagh was involved straight away making a couple of solid saves until he was beaten by a shot that went in off the cross bar. The opposition were playing a strange formation of 3 forwards and 3 defenders which meant that when they attacked, our defence were stretched to say the least. Harry Dawson was trying to marshall the troops and made some great tackles to deny them a shot on goal whilst Sam Hutchinson looked to help strengthen the defence and made some great tackles. However, the pressure of the three forwards eventually told when they scored their second goal.
The second half saw a strong display from Scotton and a great through ball from Tom Jenner ended up with Jonny Haase firing our first goal of the day. Further pressure could have resulted in an equaliser when Ben Rosie had his shot saved by the keeper.

Harry Dawson kept battling and his strong display would go onto earn him the man of the match award. At this point the ladss began to tire and the fresher opposition took advantage of this to score two late goals which made the final score of 4-1 sound alot worse than it was!

Credit to all the squad for their determination and battling spirit

U10s - Scotton Scorchers v Beckwithshaw Saints

Game 1

The first game was a resounding success for the Scorchers, with a well organised team commanding much of the game to deliver a thrilling 2-1 win over the Saints.

With Dan running the midfield with Josh and George supported by Jack running rampant up front it was only a surprise that the Scorchers only scored 2 goals, but what crackers they were. The first was a combined effort with George feeding the ball forward to Dan Wetherill who slotted home.

There followed more pressure by Scotton as Max took a throw in, well controlled by Josh before it found it’s way to George who had several attempts at goal which culminated in a fine save from the Saints goalie.

It wasn’t all one way and Ben in goal was called upon to make a number of fine saves.

The second half got off to a cracking start. George fired in from the right wing but the Saints goalie couldn’t hold the ball and it fell for Dan to fire in a blistering shot with a possible touch ion its way in from Jack Chisem.

There then followed renewed pressure from Beckwithshaw as the Scorchers lost a bit of composure and shape allowing the Saints to camp in our half. The defence remained rock solid though as it had throughout the game with two pillars of Sam and Max combining superbly to keep Beckwithshaw at bay.

The end of the game was end to end stuff, which saw Dan have a shot go just over the post, and the Saints hitting the post at the other end. A nail biting finish was set up when under pressure to clear George fired the ball past his own goalie, Ben to make it 2-1 at the final whistle.

Game 2

This was a game we were unlucky to lose, despite a first 5 minutes during which Beckwithshaw dominated and took the lead. Form then on though the e Scorchers kept pace with Beckwithshaw. With George now in goal, Max in roving midfield-defence role supported by Jonah and Ben, a midfield of Harry and Owen and a lone Elliot up front the team enjoyed a fantastic first half. Max proved to be a power house in the midfield, defending and attacking. Elliot had a couple of good chances saved, whilst Jonah and Owen made numerous key tackles to keep the game alive.

For the second half George switched with Dan and moved in to strike. An early attack by Beckwithshaw was thwarted by pressure from Jonah forcing a shot to go wide. Jonah started a good move passing the ball forwards as the Scorchers pressed on the attack only to see the ball go out for a corner. When the Scorchers goal came, it was a belter. George gained possession deep in his own half, ran through the Beckwithshaw team, looked up, sighted on goal and scored! 1-1.

Again the game ended with end to end running, frenzied tackling from Max , Ben, Harry, Jonah and Owen and George having a couple of shots failing to go in. A final shot by the Saints resulted in a fine save by Dan who could only watch as Beckwithshaw followed up to scoop the loose ball in to the net. 1-2 the final score.

Game 3

The third game was just as thrilling as the first. This time Sam took the roving role in midfield with Dan, supported by Owen and Elliot in defence, Harry in goal and Josh up front with Jack.

Despite a couple of early Scotton attempts at goal including a great effort from Josh, good defending from Owen and Elliot Beckwithshaw mounted a a great attack that required Harry in goal to pull of a fab save but couldn’t control and the Saints striker swept in from close range. 0-1.

Keeping their heads up Scotton pushed forwards and Jack had a shot crash off the post. A corner taken by Josh for Dan to sweep the ball wide of the net, followed by another wide attempt from Elliot. Then came the move of the game. Dan using great skill passed the ball down the left wing to Sam on the bye line who fired in the ball low and hard across goal where the waiting Jack Chisem turned the ball in to the net with a simple first touch 1-1.

The second half and Owen made way for Ben in defence. The boys kept up the pace despite the heat with lots of great passing on both sides. However, the pressure began to mount and Beckwithshaw scored to make it 1-2. Despite great defending from Ben and Elliot and a tireless midfield effort from Sam and Dan, Scotton couldn’t prevent a third goal from Beckwithshaw to finish the game at 1-3.

Man of the match went to Max for his efforts in the first 2 games and to Jack Chisem for his brilliant first goal for the Scorchers. But this shouldn’t take away from the other personal performances put in by the other team members. Well done.

U11’s Boys edge five goal thriller at Ripley

A belated start to the league season for the U11 boys saw them travel the short distance to Ripley with weather more like the height of summer rather then the start of October.

David Lyon captained the side and took his place at the heart of defence alongside Michael Johnson making his Scotton debut; Cameron Latimer was in goal with James Broady in midfield supported on the wings by Callum Penny and Tom Johnson with Darren Barker up front as the lone striker. On the subs bench were Liam Machon-Inman, Brad Shaw and Sam Jameson

Scotton kicked off and straightaway created problems for the hosts as James showed great energy in the centre of midfield, he created an early chance for Darren whose shot went just wide. After further pressure including a couple of corners which were cleared James and Tom created an incisive break for Callum to get in an excellent shot to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Scotton continued to dictate play with James and Darren linking well together and Callum and Tom causing problems for the home defence, Tom in particular tried his luck with a couple of shots which were well saved. At the other end Cameron marshalled the defence well and when called on made a good early save to retain the Scotton lead.

Scotton continued to dominate the play in the first half, Tom seeing another shot saved whilst David tried his luck with a cracking effort that went just wide.As half time approached Callum and Tom again had opportunities to increase the Scotton lead but both saw their shots well saved by the home keeper who was in good form. The whistle went for the break with Scotton 1-0 ahead.

The first change of the day saw Liam replace James in midfield at half time. The second half started with Ripley taking the game to the visitors, the early pressure almost paid off immediately with Cameron forced into making an excellent save with the follow up scooped just wide. The pressure continued and before long Ripley were level with a shot that Cameron had no chance of stopping in the Scotton goal, 1-1 and game on! Ripley had the bit between their teeth now, and before long were 2-1 ahead again from a fine move that Scotton could do nothing about. Brad came on for Michael and despite going behind Scotton’s heads did not drop and David showed his leadership qualities by taking the game to the opposition. Before long it paid off as Tom attacked from the left and skipped past three challenges before planting the ball into the back of the net for a wonderful solo goal. Two-all as the game moved towards the final whistle, Darren was replaced by Sam with Liam moving upfront and Sam going into midfield. Ripley was not finished however and Scotton had Cameron to thank for still being level with a couple of fantastic saves, one of which he managed to lift over the bar despite being fully stretched. This gave Scotton a lift and David got in a good position and fired in an excellent shot which was equally well saved by the home keeper. David took the resultant corner and the unexpected happened as it whistled straight into the Ripley net through a crowded box, 3-2 to Scotton with only seconds remaining. Scotton held out without any further drama and full time was blown with Scotton 3-2 winners, it was an outstanding team effort with everyone playing their part in exceptionally hot conditions, Davids leadership from the back and wonder goal to win the match for Scotton was only edged in the man of the match award by Cameron, whose second half display including a host of fantastic saves when under pressure from the Ripley forwards kept Scotton in the game.

David then snuffed out a Ripley break before Cameron and then David saw shots blocked as Scotton tried to extend the lead. Brad then found Cameron whose shot cracked the post and rebounded to safety. As half time approached Callum made it 2-0 as Cameron played Callum through and he coolly slotted the ball past the Ripley keeper. It remained two-nil at half time, and Tom replaced Callum, and Darren came on for David; Cameron went up front with Tom moving to the right wing. The second half started with Scotton again applying pressure to the Ripley defence, Tom's good approach play found Cameron whose shot was well saved; Tom then tried his luck after Sam’s shot was scrambled off the line, Tom's shot ended in the net to make it 3-0. Scotton were attacking at will, Tom creating chances for both Brad and Sam who were well cleared by the home defence. Scotton were 4-0 up from the most direct of attacks, Liam in goal was the creator, firing a goal kick which found Cameron running onto the ball and firing it into the back of the net. Scotton were not finished, Darren playing at the back found Tom who skipped past three defenders and fired it in to make it 5-0. Scotton made a couple of positional changes, Darren moved up front with Cameron replacing him in defence and Tom exchanged places with Michael who went over to the right hand side of midfield. The changes did not affect Scotton's play, Brad playing against his old team fired in to make it 6-0. With time running out Michael and Sam tried their luck with shots that went just wide, the full time whistle went with Scotton winning 6-0. Another excellent all round team performance with all the players contributing to a fine result, the man of the match award was edged by Michael who was fantastic in defence and helped the team keep a well deserved clean sheet in hot conditions.

Ripley v Scotton U9s Match Reports - Sat Oct 1

Scorchers slip-up in the sunshine then show their skills in the second game.

On the 1st October that felt more like the middle of summer, Scottons 9s took the short trip to the local derby games against Ripley. It was fantastic to see every single one of the squads 15 players available and turn out at Ripley, backed by a really enthusiastic crowd.

Two games - the boys having the lions share of the ball, loads of chances yet one they lose and one they win. Sometimes you dont get what you deserve.

The first game saw Charlie take the keepers spot, James Haveron and Alexander Rickards in Defense, Tom Manning and James Callis on the wings, Joseph in the middle and Lew Dobson roving up front. The boys started brightly with a lot of pressure, with Joseph going close early on. Ripley broke away with a long ball play (which the boys struggled with all day) and a low shot slipped through Charlie's wet hands and bobbled into the net. An unfortunate goal against the play. The boys rolled their sleeves up and Lewis Dobson had two near misses before Joseph flashed another wide of the post after a strong run. The boys were starting to chase the game and do it all 'individually' and half time came just in time for the coaches to remind them to continue a passing game.

The second half saw a few changes in personal and formation. Joseph was pushed out wide and he immediately went close again after a great run and cross. However, the boys were hit again with a sucker punch from Ripley - another long ball break which the defenders failed to cover their strikers. This second goal took the wind out the boys sales and they conceded two more quick goals - another a slip in the wet. 4-0 hardly seemed a fair reflection of how much football the boys had played and the performances in the middle from Alexander and Tom Manning & James Callis runs on the wings - and the boys managed to have another couple of efforts before an unfortunate own goal finished the game. Ripley 5-0 Scotton.

The Scorchers big squad allowed the coaches to play a fresh team in game two (as well as have time to pick up some of the boys from game 1 with a few words of encouragement)

Game 2 was 8v8, with Ethan between the sticks in the first half, Josh F took the field with James Tweed, Joel Mannion, James England, and a debut for Frankie Bulmer playing right down the middle. James Callis returned to the team and Jack sherwin played lone striker.

The boys continued playing some strong football, showing some great touches. Jack was a threat upfront, forcing a save early, and Frankie burst through the middle, shooting just wide. Scorchers attacks came fast; James Tweed, Jack and Joel all just shooting wide with James Callis breaking down the wing forcing a save. It wasn't going to be long before the boys got what they deserved, and a great move down the wing saw James Callis strike sweetly to se us score our first of the day - finally!!

Halftime saw a few more team changes, but the boys were keen to get back out. Jack twice and the ethan forced saves, but Jacks third effort wasn't to be stopped - 2-0 Scorchers. The sun was getting hotter, and so were the Scorchers, with Ethan (now out of goal, swapping with Joel) forcing a save and Lewis Francis hitting the bar with a volley at the end of a great break. The pressure was now really on Ripley and another great run and cross saw James Tweed in the right place at the back post to smuggle a poachers goal. 3-0 Scorchers and the final whistle went.

Two games where the boys should be pleased with their desire and ability to play football wth the bal on the floor. MOTM in Game 1 went to Alexander Rickards, a rock in the middle, and in Game 2 to debutant Frankie Bulmer who - is football terms - 'put in a shift' as well as showing great composure and touch. Well done to ALL the boys and their parents for their efforts today. Training next week as normal - 9am at the cricket club.

Knaresborough Celtic U11's v Scotton Scorchers U11/10's Match report

Two games played and sadly two games lost, despite a spirited performance from the Scorchers.

The start of the first game saw Darren Barker and Jack Chisem working hard up front supported by Oliver Kavanagh and Jonah Argent in Midfield. In defence were the rock solid Cameron Latimer and Sam Arditto who hard to work extremely hard keep a free passing Celtic away from Ben Haase's goal.

Despite a good start, Scorchers soon found themselves being pressed back in to their own half, despite some great saves by Ben and hard defending by Oliver, Sam and especially Cameron, the team found themselves 2-0 down by half time. The Scorchers just couldn't get the ball consistently through the midfield to the forwards, resulting in Celtic dominating this area. However, when the ball did break for Scotton, Darren was able to make some excellent runs at the Celtic goal.

Half time came and some changes were made. Wilf Bowlas replaced Jonah and Jack made way for Josh with Dan Chatten replacing Oliver. Ben came out of goal and was replaced the giant Bradley Shaw. A team talk and change of personnel saw a much stronger midfield more able to cope with the Celtic attack. Despite this Celtic again managed to score to make it 3-0. By now though, balls were more regularly starting to find there way forwards with Dan, Wilf and Elliot,feeding the now red faced and hard working Darren, who managed to convert a a great effort in to a fine goal to make it 3-1 which ultimately marked the final result.

The second game was no different. A team comprising Darren in goal, Bradley and Cameron up front with a midfield of Josh and Wilf and Ben and Jonah in defence. This time everyone got stuck in and held there own against the Celtic side with several chances going begging to the skilful Cameron's mazy runs at goal, including one off the post.However, a 3 minute lapse of concentration resulted in the Scorchers going 2-0 down. It would have been more but for Darren in goal making some awesome saves and Ben along with Jonah making many crucial tackles, oh, that and the goal posts which throughout the game repeatedly came to the Scorchers rescue. In midfield Wilf and Josh were kept extremely busy as they spent much of the time defending and trying to get the ball forwards. Cameron, despite his best efforts simply couldn't score.

Again all change at half time with Jack Chisem up front for Bradley and Josh moving from mid to strike. Midfield was left in the capable hands of Sam and Dan Chatten with Oliver and Elliot in Defence. Josh proved excellent, covering the midfield as well as up front, making a number of excellent runs. Just as the final half looked as though it would be goal less Celtic got a free kick 20m from goal. A well organised Scorchers wall was to no avail as the Celtic player fired in a perfectly placed curling shot in to the top right corner of the goal beating the soaring Darren in goal to make it 3-0.

A sign of the games that the 2 "man of the matches" went to two defenders. Cameron for his sterling efforts in the first game, and a battling Ben in the second, both of whom got stuck in and made many crucial tackles. Well done Cameron and Ben.

U8s come up against Rocketing Ripley but show real spirit

The second match weekend of the Under 8's season involved the localclash with Ripley Rockets. This would prove to be a stern challenge forour lads as they were fielding a team that included some Year 4 lads.

Straight from the kick off the defence was under pressure and beforeanyone had even had time to take their seats the pressure told andRipley scored 3 quick goals. However once the lads had woken up theystarted to compete and battled to try and overcome the opposition.

Somegood runs from Jonny Haase provided a welcome relief for a stretchedback three and an overworked midfield. However Ripley managed to scoreanother two goals before half time to take a 5-0 lead. Some half timesubstitutions followed and the second half was a much more even affair.

Jonny Haase managed to score with a curling shot from the edge of thearea and, if we had converted a couple of half chances the score linecould have been much different. Ripley always looked dangerous on thebreak and managed to score their sixth against the run of play. Creditto all the boys who continued to fight for every ball and who never gaveup. Final score 6-1. (but with second half a very good 1-1 draw)

After a pep talk and more changes, the second match proved to be a muchcloser affair. Ripley were still dangerous on the break but the Scottonboys had started to mark the opposition and this made it much harder forthem to catch us out. Their frequent attacks were thwarted by some greattackling from the boys and a goal saving tackle from Jack Howells keptthe score at 0-0. However they continued to apply the pressure and theyeventually scored a couple of goals.

Scotton pulled one back with a calmfinish from Jacob Kavanagh whilst at the other end a flying FreddieDooley kept the Ripley Rockets at bay.After half time the game became a lot more open and Jacob Kavanaghnearly levelled it but pulled his shot wide. Antony Sibanda scored hisfirst goal for Scotton with a powerful shot from the edge of the box tomake the score 2-2. Game on.

However continues pressure from Ripley then led to them scoring twomore goals but a goal line clearance from Ben Rosie denied them a fifthgoal. Scotton fought back again with Sam Hutchinson scoring after apowerful run and despite further pressure we couldn't quite score theequaliser that our play deserved. All credit to the boys for theircommitment and determination and man of the day was given to JackHowells for his outstanding defensive play.

Scorchers 7s kick off in style against Tockwith

Scotton U7's kicked off the season with two hard fought, close victoriesagainst Tockwith.

In match 1 Scotton played really well with lots of good skills andpossession. The team had 2 new boys playing - Tom and Jake, both playingreally well in their first outing. Goals from Harrison and Ben Tweed putScotton 2 up at half time with the second half continuing to be a tight gamewith Tockwith pulling a goal back late on however the boys held on with somegreat defending from Ben wilson and Edward with James going close to a 3rdgoal as the boys ran out 2-1 winners.

Scotton started the second match strongly with some great teamwork bothattacking and defending with 3 goals from Harrison to lead 3-0 followingsome really good team possession, passing and skills. Tockwith came backstrongly in the second half with 2 quick goals and almost equalised but fora great save from Elliot to hold on to a 3-2 win.

Overall the boys played really well as a team and the man of the matchawards were close with the awards going to Ben Tweed for his overallperformance in the first game and Harrison for his performance and a hatrickin the second match - but well done to all the boys in the first game.

Scotton's U9s kicked off their season in great style with some very impressive victories and scorelines against a young but very willing and committed Tockwith side. With the goals flying in thick and fast even the match reporter (thanks Ollie) found it hard to keep up. While the scorelines were emphatic - one of the most pleasing aspect was the overall commitment by all players. Many boys were asked to play in unfamilar positions and formations as the Coaches had the luxury of being able to try out a few options but all stuck to their tasks. It was great to have so many of the boys trouble the scorers showing that the team has goals in it from all positions - and those that didn't find the net this week were all certainly part of a strong defense that managed to prevent Tockwith scoring a single goal no matter how hard they pushed. Especially well done to Tockwith for always playing with a smile.

A tricky decision to single out one, as there were great performances all over the pitch - but Scotton's Man of the Match's, not only for his goals but for his all round attitude and flexibility went to James Callis. Well done James but very well done to the whole team. Roll on Ripley in a couple of weeks which - while providing a stiff test - if we continue to train hard and practice our ball retention and support play - we will have a great chance.

The new Scorchers U8's taste success vs Tockwith in season opener

After a long summer break, the Under 8’s had their first fixture on Saturday 10th September in a double header against Tockwith. The 11 lads were well supported by a large (and enthusiastic) crowd.

In the first game, a strong Scotton team fell behind against the run of play when a long ball set the Tockwith stricker up for a neat finish. However, Scotton fought back and were much improved in the second half of the game. The fightback was led by Callum Healey who, despite being asked to play in defence, seemed to be everywhere and scored the equaliser after a thunderbolt from Sam Hutchinson rebounded off the post. Determined defending from all of the team followed and Jonny Haase was able to capitalise on a great pass to finish to score Scotton’s second. Further pressure from Scotton should have resulted in more goals but a fantastic goalkeeping display from the Tockwith keeper kept the score at 2-1. However the pressure eventually told when Callum scored his second of the match. Final score 3-1 to Scotton.

In the second game some enthusiastic tackling from all the team ensured that no side dominated possession. Some excellent work in defence by Jack Howells and Ennis Mackenzie frustrated the Tockwith team and Scotton always looked capable of scoring. However as the game wore on both teams started to tire and a goal from Tockwith followed by an equaliser by Jonny Haase meant that it was all to play for in the dying minutes. Tockwith were able to capitalise on a mistake from a throw on with a rifled shot past the Scotton keeper. Final score 2 – 1 to Tockwith.

Well done to all the team (Freddie Dooley, Jonny Haase, Anthony Sibanda, Ben Rosie, Jacob Cardani, Jacob Kavanagh, Thomas Jenner, Callum Healey, Sam Hutchinson, Jack Howells and Ennis Mackensie) for ensuring an excellent start to the Under 8’s season. Callum Healey was awarded the Man of the Day award for his two goals in the first match.

Scorchers boys training locations the first few weeks of 2011/12

The Scorchers start back in training on Saturday 20th August at 10.30am for all squads at Percy Field, with training finishing around 12 noon.

On the 27th August it's the same again.

On the 3rd September, U6, U7 and U8 boys will train at the Village hall pitch from 9.30.
The u11, u10 and U9 boys will train at 9am at Percy Field

Matches for some squads commence on the 10th September and your coach will be in touch with pitch and fixture plans before this date.

Squads will be allocated 'home training pitches' which will be theIr usual training venues, but this will not be available until all fixtures are provided from the leagues we play in. Thanks

New Boys Fixtures Now Online

While still some months off - the new season fixtures are now showing in the right column on the boys part of the website for season 2011/2012. This year, as well as an U7, U9 and U11 site, we are fielding an additional U8 side (Scotton Red) to ensure we can give these year 3s the game time they need. These boys will play their village league fixtures the week before or after the 7/9/11 dates - but all should be clear from the fixture lists n the right. Dates to look forward to when the Scotton 8s take on the Scotton 9s are 22 October and 17 December - weather permitting!!!

As well as the league fixtures we will as ever be looking to arrange a few additional friendlies but as a club we are committed to ensuring the boys all get adequate coaching and skills development alongside the games.

Beaten in the Semi's - Scotton U8 Boys do the club proud at Otely

Scotton were narrowly (and very unlucky-ly) beaten semi-finalists in this years U8's Otley 6 a side tournament.

Breezing through their initial group games with some great football - winning 4-0, 4-0, and 3-1 the boys then faced a tricky Collingham team in a table topping decider- the boys in the end loosing 2-0.
That saw them through t the semi-finals as best runner up = but left us facing an Ilkley team who hadn't lost all day.

A very tight semi saw Ilkley take the lead with a looping effort which, in the sun, Alexander slightly lost sight of and it went in. Scotton then took the game to Ilkley - with Joseph getting a well-worked and well deserved equalizer. As the tie was heading for extra-time another speculative 'shin' looped high again, over the keeper before nestling in our net. 2-1 Ilkley and the boys run was over.

All the boys should be very proud of both their performances on the pitch and how they handled themselves off it. Thanks to parent for 'lending' the club your boys on a sunny Saturday and for turning up and supporting them all. Really well done to them all.

Under 9’s End of Season Tournament – Sunday 15 May 2011

Percy Fields was the setting for a round robin tournament between teams from the Nidderdale League on a rather wet and cold Sunday morning. Despite this everyone had a fantastic time thanks to the usual excellent organisation from the coaches. Scotton Scorchers had two teams, Year 3’s were the blacks and Year 4’s the reds, they were joined by teams from Ripley, Tockwith and Burton Leonard.

The Red’s had a tough start with a game against Ripley, Darren picked Liam in goal to start with and an outfield of Tom, George, Cameron, Max and James. Ripley started well, creating a couple of early opportunities which the Red’s defence were equal too; it wasn’t long before the Red’s found their shooting boots, Tom down the left finding Cameron who thrashed the ball in to make it 1-0, as the half went on there were further chances for Tom, Max and George to extend the lead whilst at the back James and Cameron were alert to any danger, the half time whistle went with the score still 1-0 to the Red’s. Darren made a couple of changes at half time bringing on Dan and Jack for Max and George. The second half started like the first with both teams creating chances, The Red’s extended their lead in excellent fashion, James finding Tom on the break who nearly broke the net with a shot from the edge of the box. 2-0 to the Red’s. Ripley were not done however and Liam was busy in the Red’s goal, showing some excellent agility to keep the 2-0 lead. As the clock ticked down Ripley got back into the match with an excellent goal to make it 2-1, despite this the Red’s kept going and George and Tom went close but right at the death Ripley equalised to make it 2-2 at the final whistle.

Game 2 saw the Red’s come up against Tockwith Greens; Darren made a couple of changes to the starting line up, Liam remained in goal with Elliot, George, Tom, Max and Cameron starting in the outfield.

The Red’s were straight on the offensive; George and Cameron seeing good chances go just wide, Max also went close with a good chance before Tom opened the scoring with a shot from the left to make it 1-0, George was causing all sorts of problems in the Tockwith defence but had no luck with shots being blocked by defenders. Just before half time Tockwith equalised to make it 1-1, slightly against the run of play.

The Red’s kept their heads up as they started the second half despite being pegged back, Darren replacing Elliot, Max and Cameron with James, Dan and Alex to freshen things up. Tom had an early chance which went just wide whilst Liam again was on top form to keep Tockwith at bay, the Red’s defence held firm with Alex and James in good form, James also got forward and saw a good chance tipped over, just as it looked as though another draw was on the cards Tom fired in another shot to make it 2-1 at the final whistle and the Red’s were on their way.

And so to game 3 and the local derby against the Blacks, the atmosphere was tense as the coaches and players eyed each other up in the warm up, the game kicked off with George having a go in the nets, and an outfield of Tom, James, Cameron, Liam and Elliot. The opening exchanges were understandably cagey as no one wanted to make the first mistake, Cameron and Elliot both went close early on whilst George made a good early save to give him confidence. As the half time whistle approached Tom saw a shot well saved and Liam had a free kick which went just wide, 0-0 and an even first period. Max, Daniel and Danny came on for the second half replacing Liam, Elliot and James.

The changes saw the Red’s take the game to the Blacks, Max and Daniel both doing well to create chances. And before long Max got his name on the score sheet, whipping in a cross to make it 1-0. Further chances were created by Max and then Tom but the game remained very tense and 1-0 it stayed as the ref blew his whistle to end the game, bragging rights to the Red’s.

Game 4 saw the Red’s line up against the Tockwith Whites. Another change of goalie saw Cameron take the yellow jersey with Liam, Tom, James, Elliot and Alex lining up in the outfield. The Whites started well creating a couple of chances which were well saved by Cameron, but he could not stop Tockwith taking the lead with a well worked goal. 1-0 and the Red’s were behind for the first time. Darren changed things with Dan replacing James and Tom almost immediately scored, his shot blocked on the line as the half time whistle went. Max, Daniel and James joined the game for the second half and the changes worked again, Max and Tom had chances before Tom scored to make it 1-1. As the full time whistle approached George almost won it for the Red’s his shot going just wide. Full time 1-1.

So four games played and the Red’s had won two and drawn two as they lined up to play Burton Leonard for the final league game before the knock out. Alex went in goal with an outfield of James, Dan, Max, George and Tom. The Red’s got straight into the Bullets, Tom feeding George who made no mistake to make it 1-0. The Red’s continued to press the Burton defence for the rest of the half, Tom, Max and George all seeing shots saved but they could not extend the lead. At half time Darren brought on Cameron, Daniel and Liam and this led to a second goal as Tom breezed past three defenders before slotting the ball home. A third goal soon followed as Tom whipped in a freekick from the edge of the box and Liam pounced to make it 3-0. Liam then got a second goal and the red’s fourth after good interplay with Max. The Red’s kept attacking the Burton goal and just before the end Jack almost scored, his shot well saved. Full time and a 4-0 score line meaning the Red’s were into the final having finished second in the league, where they would play the group winners Ripley.

Alex continued in goal for the final, and the outfield line up selected by Darren was Cameron, Tom, George, Max and Dan. As with the first game between these two sides no one was able to dominate the play as they cancelled each other out, George saw an early effort go wide whilst Cameron and Max were on top form in defence to keep Ripley at bay. When called upon Alex was equal to anything Ripley could throw at him in goal and Tom continued to try and work openings when he had the ball. Half time came with the score goalless. Daniel and Liam came on for the second half as again both teams tried to create that first opening, Elliot tried his luck and saw a shot saved as did Tom and George, finally the Red’s made the break through, Tom crossing the ball from the left and Daniel was on hand to fire in the shot to make it 1-0, with only a short time left Tom then had a chance to wrap it up breaking from his own half he fired in a shot which was saved after pressure from the Ripley defender. Almost immediately Ripley equalised however, a break leading to a shot which went in, 1-1 and heartache for the Red’s who were so close to winning the cup, had their chance gone? The referee blew for the end of the second half, extra time was needed to see if either side could win or it would be the dreaded penalty shootout.

Extra time was a tense affair with all the teams and parents watching from the sidelines as the players started to look a little tired after so many games, despite a couple of chances for each side the referee blew his whistle at the end of the game, 1-1 it finished and the lads now faced a penalty shootout.

Ripley went first, Alex saving the shot well; George then put away his penalty coolly to make it 1-0 to the Red’s. Alex then saved the second penalty but Dan saw his saved as well, 1-0 to the Red’s after the first two penalties. Ripley scored with their third attempt and Cameron stepped up to do the same to make it 2-1. Ripley scored their second with the fourth penalty and Danny stepped up and calmly fired in the Red’s third to make it 3-2. Ripley had to score the last penalty in order for Tom to step up but he wasn’t needed as the shot went wide of the goal. The Red’s had done it, winning the cup on penalties having remained unbeaten throughout the competition, an excellent team effort.

Fun Day Important Information

We are looking forward to hosting the end-of-season fun day and prize giving on this coming Sunday (22nd May). There are a few things that I thought it would be useful to summarise for you. If you have any questions then please feel free to contact me or your coach for further details.

The timetable for the day is as follows:

10-10.30 Arrive at Percy Fields

11.00 Fun Day games start

12.00 Light refreshments available from the SS bar as the games continue

1.00 BBQ

2.00 - 3.00 Presentation of awards to all squads

3.00 Bar opens for afternoon when there will be games, music, raffles, bouncy castle and penalty shoot outs

Everyone should have been allocated to a “team”. These should have been communicated to you by your coach. If you are unsure then please speak to the coach or contact me and I will advise you of which team your child has been allocated. Please feel free to dress up in your team colours, the more outrageous the better (Brazil from last year and England the previous year will take some beating!), face painting is encouraged, as are whistles, air horns, rattles and anything else that adds to the carnival atmosphere!

There will be plenty of entertainment in addition to the fun day games, this includes a bouncy castle (£2 per child for all day use) which is available all day, the BBQ, raffle, kids and adults penalty shoot out tournaments plus, of course, refreshments.

Last year was a great success, not least because of the fantastic weather, and we will be hoping for the same this year. With that in mind can you please make sure that you bring sun cream for the kids, we will be providing refreshments but extra water would never be a bad idea. We also recommend that you bring picnic chairs as we do not have any chairs available and if you want to bring a small gazebo then that will also be ok assuming that we do not have too many! We may of course not be so lucky and get similar weather to that which we had for the U9’s tournament last Sunday, so warmer jackets etc. might also be the order of the day L.

There is a lot of parking available at Percy Fields but we are expecting lots of people to attend and therefore could you please consider car sharing if possible and when you do arrive please park where indicated and park as courteously as possible. If you are just dropping off then please take the turn up to Kids at Heart to drop off there as the car park can get blocked if several cars are exiting while others are arriving.

Those that have been to Percy Fields will know that the pavilion building has been completed. There is still work to do on the inside but Mike Collier will be on hand to show parents what we have done so far and what we need to do to get it finished.

IMPORTANT - As previously notified, we will be collecting registration forms for those that want to register next season. As you will be aware we are trying to ensure that the club can cope with the demand that we have seen over the last year and put plans in place over the summer to ensure that we have the right numbers in each squad with enough coaches to coach and complete registrations with the various leagues and governing bodies. It is therefore VITAL that you re-register by the fun day to guarantee your child’s place for next season

Scotton 'Year 4's' Success in Nidderdale Mini-Tourno

Match reports to come but a big congrats to all Scotton Boys from both year 3 and year 4 who played their part in a great day on Sunday in the clubs first mini-tourno.
As much as the rain tried to put a dampner on things the boys and parents played their part in a great day.
A day which - while Ripley played some great football to top the qualifying league - when it came to knock-outs Scotton 'U9's' edged the final against ripley in a tense shoot out to win 3-2 on penalties.
Huge congrats to all scotton boys who were a credit to the club.

Uner 9s (year3) Matches v Kirby Malzeard - May 7

The year 3 Under 9s also faced a Kirby Team in their final Nidderdale League games of the season.
--APOLOGIES - SHORT REPORT FROM MEMORY--

In game one, the boys were in 'cruise control' - which, after going 1-0 up early on the sunshine saw then go into holiday-mode and they suddenly found themselves 1-2 down. Time to show their resolve and a little bit of their skill.
Slowly, they managed to get control of the ball, and of the game, and showed some great team work - building from the back, moving down the wings to cross in where we always had someone there in front of goal to knock them home. Playing this sort of football, the boys eased away to a comfortable 7-2 victory.

Game two, the boys started where they finished game 1 with some very intelligent football and the goals started to come again. A few players were tried in some different positions but they all performed tremendously well. A final score of (I think 4-1 but it may have been more) was a great way to round of the league fixtures.

Two 'men of the match' shirts were very difficult to pick as it was one of the best 'team performances' the coaches had seen' But for his sterling work, discipline and ever-present smile, one went to Joshy Fewtrall and the second, for finding his scoring boots and goal-poacher positions went to Lewis Dobson.
But a hige well done and thank you to all the boys.

Boy’s Under 9s (Year 4) Match Report for 7 May 2011 v Kirkby Malzeard

With the season fast approaching its climax, Scotton Scorchers entertained Kirkby Malzeard in the final round of league games at the Cricket Ground on a gloriously sunny Saturday morning.

Craig selected Ben in goal for the first game with an outfield of Jack, Tom, Cameron, Elliot, Sam and Dan. The game started with early Scotton pressure, Tom sizing up an early chance with an overhead kick that went wide of the goal. Kirkby soon followed with their first chance of the game again shooting wide without testing Ben in the home goal. The game followed a similar flow with both sides exchanging some good attacking play without putting the goal under too much danger, Tom shot wide after some good interplay with Cameron whilst from a free kick the visitors tested Ben with the first save of the game. Kirkby followed up with another shot that went just wide and a corner which was well cleared with his head by Tom.

Scotton continued to make some good chances themselves with Tom and Cameron shooting just wide after good build up play down the wings. Dan then tried his luck with a couple of good efforts which were well saved by the visiting keeper. At the back Sam and Elliot were playing well to keep the visitors at bay, Sam looked in good form as he cleared a quick break from the Kirkby forward line. The breakthrough came soon after with the visitors taking the lead, an unstoppable shot into the top corner, 1-0 to Kirkby.

Scotton continued to plug away with Tom, Jack and Cameron working well together, a corner was won which led to a cross / shot from Tom which went just wide. The visitors extended their lead soon after breaking well and catching the Scotton defence in two minds. 2-0 to the visitors and Scotton has it all to do.

Again Scotton continued to probe the visitor’s defence, Tom providing Jack with a chance, his shot well blocked by the Kirkby defence. Craig then made the first change of the match replacing Jack with George in an attempt to get back in the game. Scotton continued to create chances, Tom’s cross / shot was well saved whilst George and Tom played an excellent one two only for George’s shot to be blocked. Meanwhile at the other end the visitors again picked off the Scotton defence with a clinical break to make it 3-0. A slightly harsh score line for the home side, and again they had no luck in front of goal, Tom found Cameron whose shot cannoned of the cross bar and was cleared for a corner.

The corner was whipped in but again Scotton were left exposed at the back as Kirkby launched another counterattack and made it 4-0 just before half time. The lad’s heads dropped at this point and Craig made another change, bringing Liam on in goal for Ben.

Tom again tried his luck down the left, winning a corner after his cross was blocked, Tom picked the ball up again and his shot was well saved; Tom then turned supplier, finding George who used his strength to get into a good position only for his shot to be saved as well, the visitors keeper was having a blinder! Liam then pulled off his first save to ensure no more goals for the visitors before half time, although Scotton did give themselves a chance with Tom shooting from distance and finding the back of the net to make it 4-1 as the ref blew for the break.

Craig again made a change bringing on Max in place of Sam. No sooner had the whistle blown for the second half the visitors made it 5-1 with a fine shot that Liam could do nothing with. At this stage it looked like Scotton were going to suffer the biggest defeat of the season, however the players rolled their sleeves up and tried to take the game to the visitors, Cameron shooting well from distance which was well saved. Max was in good form at the back doing well to bring the ball out of defence and create some momentum for the home side; Tom certainly had his shooting boots on in the second half as he peppered the goal with three excellent attempts which were all well saved as it looked as though it was not going to be Scotton’s day. George and Tom linked up well together with an excellent one two resulting in another shot which was well saved.

George then got in the attack shooting well but winning only a corner, then Cameron followed by Max had a go but their efforts were blocked, Tom then followed up with another attempt which was saved as the visitor’s goal led a charmed life. The pressure soon paid off however as George and Tom worked the ball well, with Cameron getting in the cross and finding Tom who made it 5-2, game on!

Scotton continued to press the Kirkby goal, Tom found Cameron whose shot went just wide, George then tried his luck but again the keeper saved well as the ball headed towards the top corner. Tom and then Cameron had two goal bound efforts saved as the visitor’s keeper kept Scotton at bay. Liam played his part at the back kicking well to ensure Scotton could launch another wave of attacks, Tom picked the ball up deep in midfield and fired past the keeper to make it 5-3 and a hat trick for Tom, the comeback was really on!

Liam continued to keep alert saving well as Kirkby had a rare second half break, George then stung the keeper’s hands with an excellent shot from the left, George then tried his luck again and yet again the goal bound effort was well saved, unlucky George! George then found Tom with a one two but Tom’s shot was parried away as the clock started to tick down.

Jack then reappeared in place of Elliot as Craig urged the lads forward, Jack then started one of the moves of the game finding Cameron who in turn passed to Tom in midfield, Tom looked up and moved the ball to George who quickly returned the ball and Tom advanced and slotted the shot home to make it 5-4 with only a couple of minutes left.

Scotton could sense Kirkby were hanging on and again Tom and George worked the ball well in midfield, repeating the move that got the fourth goal Tom again broke forward behind the visitors defence and slammed the ball home to make it 5-5 – what a comeback!! As time ticked down the home side could not create another chance and the final whistle went to end a fantastic game five each.

After everyone caught their breath, game two started with Liam in goal and an outfield consisting of Sam, Jack, Max, Cameron, Tom, and George.

As with the first game both sides looked to size each other up, the visitors made the first chance, shooting just wide after good play down the right. Tom then tried his luck, his shot was goal bound but well saved by the keeper. George and Tom then exchanged passes and Tom’s shot again was well saved. Max then launched a couple of strong decisive runs from defence, beating three players he found Tom whose shot again was stopped by the keeper.

Liam was then tested in the home goal, saving well as Kirkby pressed with two corners in succession, Sam clearing well to stop the danger. Liam again saved well as the game went from one end to the other; both keepers were on top form. Cameron then did a ‘Rory Delap’, his long throw finding Tom whose shot was blocked well and cleared. Scotton continued to press however with George exchanging passes with Tom who then found Jack, his shot going just wide. Sam then produced an excellent defensive tackle to deny the visitors, the follow up shot going wide of the Scotton goal.

Sam then found Tom with an excellent pass; Tom moved the ball to George whose shot went just wide. Jack did well on the edge of the Kirkby box, finding Tom who in turn fired in a shot which was well saved again. Scotton then peppered the visitor’s goal, first Cameron, and then Tom and finally George tried their luck only to be thwarted by the keeper. As half time approached Max kept Kirkby out and Liam saved well from a rebounded shot. Half Time 0-0

The second half started like the first finished with both sides looking to make the breakthrough, Max did well in defence to clear a Kirkby chance, the ball was played up to Tom, who moved in from the left and fired the ball in, the shot beat the keeper for the first time but not the post and the ball bounced clear before Jack could pounce. Tom then tried his luck again only to see his goal bound shot saved. At the other end Sam and Max kept their concentration in defence to ensure the visitors could not score. Tom then fed in George with an excellent slide rule pass, George’s shot seemed destined for the top corner only for the keeper to pluck it out of the air. Tom then tested the keeper twice in quick succession, both well saved.

The Scotton defence was then called into action as Kirkby won two corners in quick succession, the first led to a shot which hit the post; the second was well cleared by Max. Max then led a Scotton break from the back, finding Cameron with an excellent ball who in turn found Tom whose shot from distance went wide. Kirkby then hit Scotton on the break only for Liam to pull off an excellent save.

With the game going from one end to another it was a surprise that it was still 0-0, again Scotton went close with Cameron and then George seeing good shots saved. Then Cameron and Tom had good chances blocked as the game moved into the last few minutes, Cameron then found Tom with a good cross who found George, his shot just going wide.

Kirkby then broke forward and with time ticking away slotted the ball home to make it 1-0. There was still time for one last chance, Tom and George again combining well with a good one two, George lined up his shot which again was beaten away by the keeper. That was the last chance of the match as the visitors won 1-0, another excellent contest to round off some top drawer football. Craig had a tough choice to decide the man of the match award, with Tom edging it for his five goal haul in the first game but everyone played their part in an exciting couple of games.

2011/2012 REGISTRATION FORMS

Next season's planning has already started - and with it comes a decision to both cap numbers and look to increase games - especially for the boys. We appreciate we must continue to improve the coaching we provide and the match opportunities we schedule.

That said, EVERY existing registered child is GUARANTEED a place next season if they get their registration form and cheques in before or on Funday.

Forms received later than this or at the start of next season will not be guaranteed a place and will be seen only as an application. The club will then assess these; taking into account criteria such as age bracket, location, siblings, history with team, application to the club and training etc and after three weeks into next season then make what will we are sure be a difficult decision to have to inform some parents that 'the books are full'.

The fun day does not happen without a lot of work being put in by the committee and coaches. Any help that any parents can offer, with the bar, the food, raffle prizes, etc. then this would be very welcome. If you are able to offer any assistance then please can you let me know asap.

TEAM COLOURS
Most important thing to bring colour is to deck the children out as brightly in their International team colour as possible. So Brazil is yellow top, face paints, samba maraca's etc - you get the idea.

Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 9 April 2011 v Hampsthwaite

Another outing at Percy Fields for the Under 9’s as they entertained Hampsthwaite on a glorious spring morning. The first game started with Lewis F in goal, James H and James E in defence, James C and Joseph in midfield with Lewis D and Tom J up front with Tom S on the subs bench.

Scotton started as brightly as the weather, Tom J creating space down the left and whipping in an early shot which was blocked. Scotton continued to apply pressure on the visitors defence but had to be careful of the counter attack, fortunately Scotton’s defensive rock James H was and cleared well. Joseph showed us some early invention in midfield, getting down the bye line and crossing a dangerous ball in which was cleared to Tom who made space outside the box and fired in a shot just wide.

James H was on the ball again looking to get Scotton moving from the back, supported by James E they found Joseph with a pinpoint pass who unleashed a thunderbolt which deflected for a corner. The corner was fired in and found James C whose shot was buried in the back of the net, 1-0 to Scotton and an excellent start.

Joseph was running the show in midfield, another fierce shot went just wide as Scotton tried to extend their lead, knowing how dangerous their opponents are on the break, this was the case soon after as Hampsthwaite got in two shots which were saved well by Lewis F, the rebound hitting the post.

Joseph continued to make things happen in midfield; winning a corner on the right the ball was cleared, Joseph picked up the ball and crossed for Lewis to meet it with his head only for the visiting keeper to make a fine save. The coaches changed things around with James C coming off with a knock and replaced by Tom S. Seconds later Joseph took a crack to the head and had to be replaced by George. Scotton did not let the changes disrupt their play, winning a corner Tom J found James H who returned the ball to Tom J for a shot which was cleared. Tom S then got in on the action at the back blocking a Hampsthwaite shot as the game went from end to end.

George then combined with Lewis D to feed Tom J whose shot was also blocked as the defences started to dominate, with George getting back to help out in defence. Lewis tried to create a chance down the left as half time approached before being checked by the visiting defence. 1-0 to Scotton at half time as the coaches made some changes introducing Cameron L and Max and Joseph returning to the fray after recovering from his head injury.

The visitors were straight out of the blocks from the kick off and caught Scotton cold with an early chance which made in 1-1, game on! George was showing his pace down the left with some good determined running and interplay with Tom J, Tom J finding Cameron L whose shot went for a corner, which was cleared by the visitors. Lewis F in goal was then called on to make two fantastic saves in quick succession. The second was well held and Lewis F quickly cleared the ball finding Tom J on the left, trying to cut in Tom J won a corner; quick thinking by George and Tom J saw them work a short corner, Tom J moved the ball forward to give him some space to shot and from just in from the touch line he whipped in a shot which was buried into the top right hand corner of the Hampsthwaite goal, what a shot! 2-1 to Scotton.

Scotton saw their chance to take the game by the scruff of the neck; Joseph winning a corner from the right; whipping it in he found Tom J’s head five yards out only for the defender to clear it off the line for another corner. James H came back on the pitch in place of James E as the coaches tried to keep things freshened up as the clock was ticking towards full time. Hampsthwaite were not finished however and again hitting Scotton on the break they fashioned another chance which was finished with a cracking shot from the edge of the box to make it 2-2 and another stunning goal.

Hampsthwaite now had the initiative, looking to press home their advantage a cross into the box hit a stray hand and the referee pointed to the spot. Lewis F made himself look big as the Hampsthwaite penalty taker took four steps back and blasted the ball over the bar, a lucky break for Scotton!

Max, playing alongside James H in defence showed us his pace with a break from defence, Lewis D back on the pitch having replaced Tom J linked well with Joseph, finding Cameron L in the box, the shot was cleared but only to Joseph who tried his luck with a long range effort which went just wide. George then created another opportunity from just outside the box skipping past a couple of challenges he fired in a shot into the bottom corner, with the keeper beat the ball hit the post and bounced out to Cameron L who could not get away his shot and the visitors cleared their lines. The home side tried one last chance down the left but the ball was put out as the referee blew for full time; an excellent game, 2-2 and a fair result capped by some quality play from both sides; the coaches awarding the man of the match award to Tom J for his excellent second half goal.

Game 2 kicked off with Joel (Keeper), James C, Josh, Luke, Elliot, Tom S and Daniel; the game started with both sides sizing each other up, but it was not long before Scotton tested the visitors defence, Luke splitting the back line with an excellent pass which found Daniel whose shot was blocked and cleared away.

As in the first game the visitors looked dangerous on the break and it was not long before Scotton were tested, Daniel getting back with some superb defending to clear the danger for a corner which was well defended. More pressure from the visitors as they looked to gain the upper hand, a shot was fired in which went wide and then they tested Joel in the home goal with a shot which was well saved.

Josh and Elliot were working hard at the back to sweep up the Hampsthwaite danger, however the respite was short lived as another shot was fired in which Joel did well to tip over. The corner was swung into the box and half cleared by an alert James C, but Hampswaite fired in another shot which Scotton could do nothing with, 1-0 to the visitors.

It was backs against the wall stuff for the Scotton defence as Hampsthwaite came straight back at them, Joel saving well from another shot on goal. Daniel did well down the left hand side as he tried to take the pressure of the home defence and create an opportunity for Scotton to equalise but Hampsthwaite soon created another chance, although Josh was equal to it and cleared well. Again the ball was not fully cleared and another shot rained in on the Scotton goal, which hit the back of the net, 2-0 to Hampsthwaite and Scotton have it all to do!

The coaches made a couple of changes, Lewis F and Cameron L came on for Tom S and James C. Straight away Joel was called on to make another save before the visitors added a third with another fine shot from the edge of the box, 3-0 to Hampsthwaite

As half time approach Luke showed some good determination in midfield to hold off two Hampsthwaite whilst trying to play in the Scotton attack, the danger cleared by Hampswaite, who counter attacked again, the shot hit the back of the net to make it 4-0 and the half time whistle went which provided the coaches with an opportunity to re-organise the team.

The coaches rang the changes, Elliot going in goal replacing Joel and Josh was replaced by James H and Lewis D. Scotton started the second half in lively fashion; an early chance by Lewis F forced a corner which was cleared. James H was back in the groove at the back calmly clearing a dangerous move from Hampsthwaite. Again Lewis F tried to force the play in the visitors half making a good run down the right but the ball was cleared up field. Elliot then kept the visitors at bay with a good save as the coaches brought on Joseph for Luke. Almost immediately the change paid off, Elliot launched an excellent kick out which found Joseph who ran onto the ball and slipped it past the keeper to make it 4-1, is there a famous comeback on the cards?

Scotton had the initiative now! Lewis D was in great form finding Cameron L with a good pass, Cameron let fly with a thunderbolt of a shot which was saved well but the rebound came back out and Cameron tried his luck again but the keeper was equal to it. Cameron was then replaced by Tom J as Scotton worked to get back in the game with the clock ticking down.

Lewis F created a chance for himself which was saved, Lewis D then pounced on the rebound only for his shot to go wide. Tom J then played in Lewis D whose shot was deflected for a corner which came to nothing. The two Lewis’s were replaced by Daniel and Luke for the last few minutes, Daniel was straight in the action, his shot well held by the Hampswaite keeper. Josh also rejoined the game and quickly got stuck into the visitors attack clearing a dangerous break down the right.

Joseph then had a jinking run down the right wing, finding Tom J with an excellent pass, Tom slipped past two defences before shooting just wide from the angle. With the last kick of the game James H fired in a long throw in from the right and Tom J hit it on the half volley but the ball screamed just over the bar as the whistle went for full time, 4-1 to the visitors but an excellent second half performance from all the players who did not let their heads drop and kept going to the end. Man of the match was Josh for his stout defending in the face of an attacking barrage from Hampsthwaite.

SCORCHERS U11s END OF SEASON WINNING STREAK SETS UP TITLE DECIDER FOR UPCOMING LAST MATCH OF THE SEASON

Scorchers U11s had come off the back of a disappointing away defeat vs Burton Leonard; 4-1. In mid table, with 4 games remaining, it was looking unlikely the boys would be collecting silverware this year. The boys however, had other ideas and took their last away game of the season vs Tockwith in a narrow 0-1 victory to set up an intense run in of three home games in a row. With 3 home games left the boys were still mid table but now at least had with a mathematical chance of winning the league – if they won all of their three remaining games!!!

Saturday 2nd April
The first of the hat-trick of games was against Burton Leonard Bullets who had defeated us 4-1 earlier in the season. The boys were facing a further challenge of missing a few regular players missing including Dan the normal No.1 keeper.

The boys got off to a really good start, taking the game to the visitors with Lorcan bossing the midfield. Midway through the first half a cross went through the legs of 2 players and into the penalty area. This was met by Ben who smartly placed it into the back of the net to put the Scorchers one in front. Moments later Scorchers had a chance to increase the lead but the shot was wide, this seem to spark Burton into life they hit the post and stand in keeper Darren made some important saves and for the rest of the half the boys defending was outstanding.

The second half saw Scorchers goal come under more pressure and it seem only a matter of time before Bullets equalised but once again the boys defended excellently. When we did manage an attack it was difficult for our lone striker as the boys faced constant pressure from the Bullets. However, the boys held on to secure a great victory in what was a real team effort with an outstanding performance from Lorcan. 1 down 2 to go.

Saturday 9th April
This time Scorchers were at home to Hampsthwaite and Birstwith, who we recorded a good 4-1 victory in what was our best performance of the season. H&B would be out for revenge after the defeat on their own ground.

Scorchers kicked off and it was a fairly even start before the boys started to create a few chances, and after some good pressure a excellent corner was met perfectly on the head by Ben and gave the keeper no chance.
1-0 Scorchers. As so often this year, the boys sat back a bit after going in front but Dan (back in goal after his illness) made some good saves while the defense took everything that was thrown at them to hold onto our vital lead. Scorchers were starting to catch Hampswaite on the break and it was from two such break-aways that the points from this game were secured. Having won the ball back in his own half Lorcon released Alex down the left who beat the defence for pace and beat the keeper at his near post, to ease the pressure on the home side. Hampswaite were not going to give in, every time we cleared the ball it just came back at us, until Alex closed down a Hampswaite defender after we had cleared - stealing the ball and beating the remaining defenders to shoot low into the bottom right hand corner putting us 3-0 just before the break.

Even at 3 down Hampswaite never gave up and all our lads had to give everything to keep them out of the game, and the second half continued with Hampswaite attacking but the Scorchers defense always seem to just get that vital foot in when needed. It was a fairly even contest as both teams took it in turns to attack, Scotton always look dangerous on the break and Hampswaite couldn’t deal with our corners. However it was Hampswaite who scored the only goal of the second half with less than 10 minutes to go. Having won the ball back in our half they midfielder ran into the box and fired into the net. The goal gave them a lift and they applied more pressure on the Scotton goal but once again our boys were up too the task, the referee signal 2 minutes to play which seem to take an age but the final whistle did eventually go on another excellent victory.

This now see’s Scorchers in second places a point behind leaders Tockwith who have played all their matches. So victory in the final league game at home to Kirby Malzeard Lions will secure the league for the boys. Despite Kirby’s record, we are sure this is by no means a forgone conclusion. The Lions have nothing to lose and what better way to finish a season then by gaining your first points and denying your opponents the title.

The final match – the title decider – is at home on Saturday May 7th kicking off at 9.45. The season has definately been an all-squad success story with all boys switching between league and friendly games to record some great wins and play in some high quality football games. We are sure this last game of the season will be equally memorable.

Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 2nd April 2011 v Burton Leonard Bullets

A rare outing to Percy Fields for the Under 9 Boy’s saw them host Burton Leonard for the latest round of fixtures on an overcast but thankfully mild morning. The coaches decided to ring the changes from the reverse fixture a few weeks earlier; the first game kicked off with Ethan in goal and an outfield of James H and Lewis at the back; James C and Tom in midfield and a front two of Jack (AKA Neil Mellor!) and Cameron (AKA Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz).

Both teams looked up for the game and the early exchanges were in midfield with the players sizing each other up. It was not long however before Scotton created the first chance, Tom getting down the right wing and finding Cameron with a pinpoint pass, Cameron used his strength to fend off the defender and found Jack whose shot was buried in the back of the net, 1-0 Scotton and a well worked goal.

Burton looked to create their own opportunity straight away, but Lewis was equal to the forward clearing away the danger. Further good defensive play saw James H and then Cameron clearing the Scotton lines. Burton then won a corner on the left, it was fired in at the near post but Tom got his head to it and James H and then Cameron cleared the ball up field.

Tom then tested the Burton goalie with a shot which was well saved, whilst Lewis was a rock in defence denying Burton an opportunity to equalise. Cameron then attacked the Burton defence with an excellent cross / shot which found Jack in an excellent position, his shot was well saved by the keeper. With half time approaching Jack had another shot which just missed the right hand post, the ref then checked his extremely accurate timepiece and blew for half time with the score 1-0 to Scotton.

A change by the coaches in the break, Ethan moved into midfield and James C went in goal. Scotton went straight on the offensive, Tom finding Cameron before the attack was snuffed out. Scotton then won a corner down the right and Tom whipped it in only for Burton to clear their lines; Cameron was flying down the left pushing the Burton defence back and when not in possession defending from the front in order to keep the pressure on. Tom then tried his luck with a half volley which was blocked but found Jack in space in the box, the ball just squeezing past the post. Burton still posed a threat up front but James H was equal to the challenge, defending his lines well and breaking into midfield where he found Cameron with a lovely pass, Cameron then played in Tom who was dispossessed but ran half the length of the pitch to tackle the Burton player and protect the slim Scotton lead.

Tom then picked up the ball down the left, leaving two defenders in his wake and winning a throw in; the ball found Ethan whose stinging shot was well saved but Cameron was in the right place to bury the rebound, 2-0 to Scotton – get in there!.

Burton were not beaten however and after some good defensive work from James H and then Tom in midfield they broke down the right and pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. Burton had the initiative at this stage but Lewis and then Cameron with his head cleared the Scotton lines; more pressure came Scotton’s way, Tom using his head to clear the ball and then the follow up shot went wide. But Burton soon equalised, picking up the clearance they fired the ball in to make it 2-2, game on.

Scotton tried to take the game to Burton as full time approached, a shot from the right by Tom was saved and Cameron followed up with an overhead kick which went just wide. Tom then unleashed a thunderbolt from the right hand side of the box which the keeper parried away. And with one last chance, Burton conceded a free kick on the edge of the box; Tom lined up the shot and with the whole Burton team on the goal line he fired towards goal, the ball just rising over the bar. That was the last action with the referee blowing for full time, an entertaining game with some outstanding skills on show and a man of the match performance by Ethan.

Game 2 saw Lewis F go between the sticks, James E and Josh lined up in defence, Elliot and Owen in midfield and Charlie and Tom S up front.

Scotton got the game underway and Charlie made an early chance for himself and causing havoc in the Burton defence. Burton were not going to sit back and defend and James was at his best to clear the danger at the edge of the box. Charlie was on fire up front, breaking again from midfield, the visitors defence had no answer, Charlie then got in a shot which went just wide.

At the back James and then Elliot cleared the danger as the game went from one end to the other. More Burton pressure followed but Tom and Charlie were on hand to clear the Scotton lines and when called upon Lewis got down well to make a save.

Charlie continued to leave the defenders in his shadows as he broke forward every time he picked up the ball, carrying the ball from midfield he skipped past two defenders and fired in a shot to make it 1-0 to Scotton; Josh and Elliot then set him away after some good defending, with Charlie flying down the left his shot was well saved by the goalie.

Burton then applied further pressure but last ditch defending from Josh and then Tom who took one in the stomach for the Scotton cause kept Scotton in front. As half time approached Burton had a corner which was well saved by Lewis; 1-0 to Scotton at half time.

The coaches changed things at half time, Elliot going in goal and Lewis moving into midfield. Elliot was called into action straight away saving from a shot in the box. Another chance followed for Burton which went just wide. Charlie then blocked a Burton effort as Scotton were put under pressure at the back; Elliot kept Scotton in front with an excellent save. It was all hands to the deck at the back as wave after wave of Burton attacks were repelled by some stout defending from James, Owen and Josh. Scotton managed to relieve the pressure with an attack of their own, Owen finding Charlie whose shot went just wide.

Burton though were soon back on the attack but James was having a blinder at the back, sweeping up the ball and when Burton did get a shot in Elliot was equal to it with an excellent save. Lewis caught one in the mouth for his trouble as he cleared for a corner, the danger cleared again by James for another corner. The ball was floated in by Burton who steered the ball in the net to make it 1-1. Straight from kick off the Scotton defence was on the back foot, and a quick break led to Burton’s second goal, 2-1 to Burton with time running out.

Despite this set back the lads kept their heads up, Josh and James continued to work hard at the back; Elliot was called on again to make a good save and James cleared the danger but with seconds left Burton got a third to wrap up the game and make it 3-1 to the visitors. Despite the score the lads worked really hard for each other and James was given the man of the match award for a sterling effort at the back.

Boy's Under 9s Match Report for 19 March 2011 v Hampswaite.

At last the parents were rewarded with some better spectator weather as the Under 9’s faced Hampswaite in a tough away fixture on a fine spring morning.

For the first game the coaches started with Cameron L in goal and an outfield of Max, James, Ewan, Tom, Lewis and Cameron B. The boys started brightly with Ewan putting the home side under early pressure down the left and providing Cameron with an early chance which was snuffed out by the Hampswaite defence. James took Ewan’s lead by making an excellent darting run down the right wing, finding Tom with an excellent pass; Tom then exchanged passes with Ewan just outside the box before having a shot which went just wide.

Tom then turned provider, picking up a throw in from Ewan he produced an excellent cross which Cameron steered just wide. Max then got in the action, making a strong run to the edge of the area before finding Tom who tested the goalie with an excellent shot. Max then forced a corner which found Ewan whose shot went just over the bar. Excellent pressure from Scotton, which continued with further saved efforts from Cameron and Tom. The first goal then came after excellent play by Max and Lewis whose through ball found Cameron who made no mistake to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Cameron had his sight firmly on the goal now, an excellent cross shot was well saved and from the subsequent clearance Tom almost buried one on the half volley, his shot clipping the post and going wide. Ewan then got in on the act again his shot blocked by some last ditch defending, which led to a rare Hampswaite break which was cleared by James with an excellent tackle, and Lewis swept up the loose ball.

Cameron was at the heart of all Scotton’s attacking play, breaking down the right he won a corner after some neat interplay with Max. Hampswaite then started to get more into the game, Tom and Ewan clearing well after good movement by the home side, but Scotton continued to take the game to the home side, Tom saw another shot saved and Cameron planted the follow up into the net to make it 2-0 for Scotton.

Cameron was on fire and soon after collected the ball down the left hand side and cut in and fired in an excellent shot which the keeper could not stop, 3-0 to the visitors and another excellent hat trick from Cameron as the half time whistle went.

The coaches changed things around at half time, giving Cameron and Max a rest and introducing Tom M and James. Scotton started the second half like the first putting in some early pressure on the home side’s goal. Tom J got in another shot which was well saved by the keeper who was having an excellent game, Tom M then got into the action finding Ewan with an excellent pass, and Ewan with a trademark thunderbolt had the net bulging again to make it 4-0. Again Scotton came forward, giving the home side no respite, Tom J again trying his luck with a good shot that was saved, James H then showing his defensive abilities sweeping up at the back, Cameron L was then called upon to make his first save of the day; the follow up corner was scrambled away by the Scotton defence. Cameron and Max then rejoined the fray replacing Lewis and James H; Cameron was straight into the action again, picking up a ball from Tom M he fired just wide. Max then show us his defensive skills clearing well to keep the home side out and finding Ewan in midfield who exchanged passes with Tom J and found Cameron in space in the Hampswaite area, Cameron’s shot was blocked but Tom J was on hand to follow up and squeeze the ball home and make it 5-0.

Lewis and James replaced Tom J and Ewan for the final few minutes; Cameron continued to search for further goals, his shot went just wide and then he found Tom M whose attempt was saved. James H was still alert at the heart of defence clearing well and when Hampswaite did get another shot in then Cameron L was equal to it with an excellent save. Full time 5-0 to Scotton and an excellent all round performance, particularly Max who was deservedly named man of the match.

Game 2 saw the coaches ring the changes, with a line up of Ben in goal, Daniel, Sam, Oscar, Joseph, James and Luke. The game started with Hampswaite eager to make amends for the first game, early pressure from them was snuffed out by good tackling by James, finding Joseph in midfield who battled well to keep hold of the ball and exchanged good passes with Oscar. Sam then did well to break up another attack from Hampswaite, with Joseph and Daniel on hand to get the ball clear. Then the home side managed to breach the visitors defence but Ben was equal to the shot and made an excellent save. Another shot came in from the home attack which went over the bar, the danger over for the time being.

Despite some excellent defensive play the boys were being pushed back and Hampswaite made the breakthrough soon after with an excellent shot from the edge of the box; 1-0 to the home side.

Daniel and James got in good tackles in midfield to stifle another Hampswaite attack but another break down the left gave the home side an opportunity which they took, firing in the shot from the angle. 2-0 to Hampswaite and Cameron L came on for Oscar as the coaches looked to change things around.

Cameron was soon in the thick of the action with some good interplay with James. Hampswaite came forward again and Ben saved well from a good shot, with the rebound cleared by Cameron as the half time whistle went, giving the boys a chance to regroup.

The second half started with the home side again applying pressure on the Scotton goal, Joseph blocked well in the box and the ball was cleared by Cameron, another chance was cleared by Luke as Hampswaite peppered the visitor’s goal with a succession of shots which went wide. Daniel was replaced by James and straight away the game changed Joseph created a chance for Scotton firing in his shot to make it 2-1 and game on!

Tom M then replaced Luke as Sam and James put in excellent tackles to break up another attack, whilst Tom M got himself into a couple of excellent positions in the box, the keeper doing well to block his attempted shot. James was then replaced by Oscar as the coaches looked to get the team back level. Cameron did well to break down the left; cutting inside his shot just missed the goal. Cameron then found himself back defending as Hampswaite realised they were in a game now and tried to turn the game back in their favour.

Hampswaite broke again and despite an excellent defensive block from Oscar they squeezed the ball home to make it 3-1. Straight away Hampswaite were back on the attack, firing in an unstoppable shot to make it 4-1. As the game drifted away from Scotton, Hampswaite won a corner which was only partially cleared and the follow up shot hit the back of the net to make it 5-1, three quick goals killed off Scotton’s hopes of a comeback. As full time approached there was still time for Hampswaite to add another goal to make it 6-1 at the final whistle. Despite the loss the boys gave their all and Cameron L was named man of the match for an excellent display across the pitch.

Scotton U9s Match Reports - Away v Tockwith March 12 2011

Scotton 9s travelled (via some interesting road diversions) to Tockwith to play 4 games on two pitches against what has historically been tough opposition.

The boys split into two teams:
Reds: Playing 7-a-side. Joseph N, Lewis D, Lewis F, Cam B, Max B, Elliot T, Josh F and Ethan I.
Blacks: Playing 6-a-side. Dan T, James T, Alexander R, Luke D, Ben H, Tom S, Joel M.

Starting with the Blacks, Tockwith came out fast with some early pressure, with Ben in goal putting in some good saves and the odd juggle that kept the coaches alert! Luke and Alexander were also very strong in defense; Alexander breaking forward down the wings. In one break for the boys Alexander blasted a shot that drew a good save from the Tockwith keeper. As half-time drew near, there was a mix up in the Scotton defense that left Ben exposed and the Tockwith striker slotted home calmly. The half-time whistle saw the score Tockwith 1 - 0 Scotton. It was time to regroup and time for calm heads.
The boys came out ready to play football in the second half with Dan taking a turn in goal and a few changes in position. The boys were strong at the back and were now starting to push forward with further good skills from Alexander and Joel. However Dan was pressed into action and mae a great save, with James T and Tom S combining to clear the ball upfield. Both teams were starting to cancel each other out but as the match drew to a close Dan came to our rescue again with a fantastic save from Tockwiths No.17. A much stronger second half for the boys who could be proud of their workrate and commitment; final score Tockwith 1 - 0 Scotton.

Game2 saw a switch of coaches for the Blacks and with it a change in fortune!!
In this game, it was Scotton who came out strong and with the early pressure, with Joel working an opening in the middle of the field, laying a neat ball off to Dan who hit the ball sweetly into the back of the net. Goal. 1-0 Scotton! and well deserved from all their efforts. But the boys weren't done. A good attack led to a corner which Tockwith didnt deal with. The ball broke to James Tweed who shot first time to open up a 2-0 lead for the boys. Tockwith hit back - and just before the interval they grabbed a goal to leave the half time score tockwith 1-2 Scotton. Game on!
The start of the second half saw Luke dance through only for Tockwith to nip the ball away and clear. Alexander raised forward again and a strong shot was parried by their keeper, only for Ben to pounce on the rebound to give the boys a 2-goal cushion again. Dan, after recovering from a nastly bang on the head has a strong shot saved by their keeper and, just before the final whistle Luke was again unlucky - drawing a fine save from the Tockwith keeper. The final whistle, and saw the boys wrap up a well deserved 1-3 win.

Moving to the Reds, Scotton started quickly with Joseph playing well in midfield, fighting hard for the ball and delivering some great balls into the box . The Tockwith goalie was working well and coping with everything that was fired at him. Although Scotton did most of the attacking in the first half there were a few break away chances by Tockwith which were excellently cleared by Scotton’s defence. Lew F managed a great tackle to stop a strong Tockwith attack. This ball was put down the wing where Lew D took control and shot past the keeper to make it 1-0. Scotton didn’t lose concentration and kept their shape to continue their attacking play.

A quick change around at half-time saw James H go between the sticks and Lew F and Ethan play up front. Scotton continued to press forward with Joseph bursting through midfield to fire past the Tockwith goalie to put the score to 2-0. The boys continued their pressure with Cam showing his dribbling and passing ability. Tockwith put a precise shot into the centre in front of goal which was cleared well by Josh. A tackle by Elliot stopped another Tockwith attack and a quick pass to Max enabled a run forward and a pass to Cam for a chance on goal which was just cleared wide for a Scotton corner. The corner was quickly taken by Joseph but nobody could get on the end of it. The final whistle and a strong performance by Scotton, with some fantastic team work, to gain a 2-0 win.

Game2 saw a few changes in position, with Ethan back between the sticks. Scottons U9s were now showing all the skills they had practiced during their training - putting together both some great passing moves as well as some strong individual skill. Lewis Dobson was on hand to score Scotton first in the game - right place at the right time. Then, a sweeping move starting from Ethan in goal, to Joseph on the wing, on to Cameron who put in a great cross only for Lew D to nudge the ball just wide - stil, a great example of breakway football. From the corner whipped in by Joseph the Tockwith keeper, under pressure, bundled the ball into his own net!! Halftime - and the boys were in control 2-0.

The second half saw Elliot take the keepers top to let Ethan stretch his legs. And this proved a great tactical switch as early in the second half the boys swepped forward, with Max laying the ball early to Ethan who struck a sweet shot first time into the bottom corner. 3-0! The boys were now puching forwards aggresively, leaving just one at the back on occassions - a risky strategy but one of Lew F, James H or Joseph were always in hand. Tockwith were tiring, and Joseph scored the 4th and final of the day direct from a corner on the right! The final whistle saw the final score Tockwith 0-4 Scotton.

Well done to all the boys with some great skills and some strong defense when needed. For the Blacks, MOTM was Alexander for all round team play and some great strikes on goal. For the Reds, MOTM went to Lewis D, who not only got on the scoresheet in both games but was very calm on the ball with some great passing skills on display!!

Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 26 February 2011 v Burton Leonard Bullets.

The Under 9’s squad travelled to Burton Leonard for their latest league game and after a night of heavy rain found the surrounding areas pretty wet under foot. Fortunately the drainage was in good working order and the pitches were all playable.

Daniel captained the first game and started with Cameron L between the sticks and an outfield of Ewan, James, Tom, Max, Sam and Daniel. The game got underway and Scotton went immediately on the attack with a good break from Ewan. Daniel then led from the front getting in an important defensive tackle to prevent a shot from the Burton forwards. Scotton applied some further early pressure; Tom seeing a shot blocked and then after two quick corners saw his next effort sail over the bar.

Despite the heavy conditions both sides were looking to play the ball around, a Burton attack was broken up by Ewan who found Tom with an excellent pass, Tom controlled the ball and went past two defenders and fired home to make it 1-0.

Burton picked up the play in Scotton’s half but Sam and Max were defending excellently, finding the midfield with some good passing. Scotton won a throw in on the left, Ewan found Tom whose cross in was picked up by Daniel and the captain buried the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0 to Scotton.

Scotton started to use the full width of the pitch, James, Ewan and Max interchanging passes in midfield and controlling the play well. Burton however were no pushovers and continued to probe the Scotton defence, after a good defensive clearance from Daniel, a corner was whipped in and Burton found the back of the net, 2-1 to the visitors and game on.

Again Burton attacked the Scotton goal but Daniel and Sam were in fantastic form at the back clearing the danger. James then showed his pace on the ball, getting down the wing and firing in an excellent cross which was cleared. Ewan and James then combined well to keep the pressure on; a cross from the right won Scotton a free kick at the edge of the box. Tom tried to lift the ball over the wall but it clipped it and was cleared. Ewan then found his shooting boots, seeing two efforts blocked, the ball found its way to Tom whose shot was half stopped by the goalie but crossed the line to make it 3-1, as half time approached Burton put the Scotton defence under pressure but Sam showed his defensive qualities to clear the danger. HT 3-1 to Scotton.

Burton came out looking to score early, an early effort on goal was saved by Cameron and then the ball was cleared after a goal mouth scramble. At the other end James had a shot blocked and Tom and Ewan saw efforts saved by the home goalie. The follow up corner was whipped in and Daniel just shot wide after he got into an excellent position. Max continued working the ball well from the back, finding Ewan with an excellent ball and then sweeping up as Burton tried to break.

Scotton started to create more chances up front, Tom finding Daniel in the box whose shot went just wide. Meanwhile at the back Sam and Max continued their excellent work, stifling any Burton attacks. Daniel then saw a couple of good shots go wide as Scotton tried to extend their lead. The fourth goal arrived when Sam and Max worked the ball out of defence and found Daniel, the captain looked up and played the ball into Tom’s feet as he bore down on the Burton goal, reaching the ball just before the goalie and slipping the ball past him to make it 4-1 and a hat trick for Tom.

Max continued to defend stoutly, providing excellent protection for Cameron’s goal. As the clock ticked down to full time Ewan found Tom in midfield, Tom slipped past one defender and shot from just outside the box to make it 5-1 as the full time whistle went. An excellent performance from all the lads, with the captain Daniel getting a deserved man of the match award.

The second game started with Cameron L in goal, Lewis D (captain) & James E in defence, Lewis F & Joseph in midfield and Cameron B & Jack in attack. James H started as reserve and rolling subs were used throughout the game. Scotton started brightly with several attacking moves coming from the midfield and strikers. The first goal was not long in coming when Joseph was set up by Cameron B and scored in the bottom corner (1-0). At the other end Cameron L made a good low save from Burton Leonards first real attack.

The home side levelled the scoring when Scotton did not clear their lines from a corner (1-1). This was against the run of play but from the re-start we took control again. Cameron B had a long range shot go just wide and he was then involved in a goalmouth scramble with Jack. Somehow the ball stayed out of the net. Jack was eventually rewarded with a goal when he slid in at the back post (2-1).

Lewis F then got in on the action with a good poachers goal (3-1) before the home keeper made an excellent save to deny Scotton adding a fourth. This did eventually come before half time when a shot by Joseph was turned in by Jack (4-1). The first half saw some good attacking football on a wet muddy pitch which was a credit to the way they all played as a team. A change at half time saw Lewis F go in goal, James H & James E in defence, Joseph & Cameron L in midfield and Cameron B & Lewis D in attack, Jack starting as sub.

The second half started as the first had gone with Scotton pressing for another goal and dominating the game. Some slick passing ended with the home goalkeeper making a good save. Cameron L soon added another goal, going around a couple of defenders before shooting past the keeper (5-1).

Scotton kept on pressing with good shots by Lewis D and Joseph going just wide. James E took a quick throw in to set Jack free which also went just wide. If the shooting in the second half had been more like the first half we could have seen a score in double figures, such was Scotton’s dominance. Even though they were good going forward the boys also worked hard in defence when they lost the ball, with the two James’ breaking up the home team’s attacks and quickly launching Scotton’s next attack.

It was like watching Man Utd or Arsenal at their counter attacking best with the ball moving quickly from one end to the other with several players involved. The defence as a team was so good that Lewis F did not have a save to make and finished with the cleanest shirt on the pitch. The final whistle went with Scotton winning 5-1 and Cameron B picking up the man of the match award. Well done to all the team.

Under 9’s Football tournament at Wetherby JFC – Saturday 12 February 2011

It seems like an age since the boy’s were in competitive action, but Saturday saw two squads travel to Wetherby JFC for a mini tournament with the hosts and Knaresborough Celtic.

Craig, Mark and John’s squad consisted of Cameron L in goal, Max, James, Tom, Ewan, George and Cameron B with Luke, Danny and Sam starting on the bench for the first game against Knaresborough Celtic.

Scotton kicked off and went straight on the attack, Ewan found some room for a shot which was buried with confidence in the back of the net, 1-0 to Scotton and an excellent start to the game. Scotton kept up the pressure and both Cameron B and George went close after good approach play. Tom then worked some magic down the left wing and found George with a perfect cross to make it 2-0.

There was no respite from Scotton; Ewan and Cameron exchanged passes with Tom whose shot went just wide, Max then produced an excellent break from the back, finding Tom down the left resulting in the award of a couple of corners in succession. Cameron B and Tom both tried their luck again with shots which were blocked but George (fox in the box) was at hand to get his second of the game, 3-0 to Scotton. A fourth quickly followed when Tom took on the defence down the left hand side, cut in and powered a shot which the goalie could only parry into the net.

Luke and Sam joined the action and it was not long before it was 5-0, good play by Max at the edge of the box found Tom who buried the shot into the back of the net. As half time approached Cameron B used his strength to make progress down the right wing, unleashing a shot which went for a corner. Tom took the set piece and found Cameron B who made no mistake, 6-0 to Scotton at half time.

Celtic had been pinned back for most of the first half however they came out looking to create some chances, Max however had other ideas, picking the ball up in defence he powered forward and found Cameron B with an excellent pass, Cameron crossed the ball and found Tom who made it 7-0.

Cameron B continued to pose a threat in the Celtic defence, getting another shot away which was blocked and cleared, whilst at the back Sam and Luke were alert to any break by Celtic, and Sam got in an excellent tackle to break up play. James rejoined the game as Scotton pressed Celtic again, Cameron B and Ewan both seeing their shots blocked. Ewan then won a corner from an excellent kick out by Cameron L and swung it in for Danny to score with an excellent shot to make it 8-0.

Luke, Max and Sam were keeping thing tight at the back when called on, Luke showing great determination in midfield to stop Celtic creating any chances and when they did get through Cameron L kept his concentration to make two fine saves. With time running out James had three excellent shots blocked in quick succession, the Celtic defence just about managing to clear the ball but Danny cut out an chance of a break away and found Ewan on the left whose shot at the edge of the box was unstoppable, 9-0 to Scotton and the full time whistle was blown – excellent display from all the team.

Game 2 against Wetherby JFC kicked off with Cameron L in goal, and an outfield seven consisting of Tom, George, Ewan, James, Luke, Cameron B and Max with Danny and Sam on the bench.

The game started with both teams trying to gain the upper hand in midfield, Scotton had the first chance on goal when Cameron B was caught just outside the box after some excellent play through the middle. Tom took the free kick which went just wide of the left hand upright.

Max, James and Luke were kept busy in defence with Wetherby trying hard to get on level terms, but all three did well in protecting Cameron L’s goal. Ewan mounted an attack from midfield finding George with an excellent pass, George found Tom whose initial shot was blocked, the rebound fell to Ewan, again the hosts defence held their own as Cameron tried his luck. Scotton started to exert some real pressure on the Wetherby defence, Tom found Cameron B with a great pass, Cameron then slotted an excellent ball to George who picked out Ewan who found some space and unleashed an excellent shot towards goal where George got on the end of it to keep up his excellent scoring record for the morning to make it 1-0 to Scotton.

The hosts came back strongly but Max and James were putting in a great shift at the back, using the ball well to feed the midfield, James even go up front and tried his luck with a shot which just went wide. Cameron B then picked up a nasty knock and was replaced by Sam and the half came to an end with Scotton still 1-0 to the good.

Ewan replaced Cameron L in goal, Cameron taking his place up front with Danny joining the fray from the bench. Wetherby went straight on the attack and it was not long before Ewan was called on to make a great save to retain the visitors lead, Ewan then made another great stop which was swept up by Sam in defence and the danger was cleared.

Scotton started to take the game to the hosts with Tom then George seeing good shots blocked. Cameron then made progress down the right hand side winning a throw in just to the edge of the box. Tom picked up the ball and dribbled into the box and fired in an unstoppable shot to make it 2-0.

Wetherby tried to get back by hitting Scotton on the break, again the defence of Sam, Max and James held firm and when Ewan was called into action he saved well to preserve the lead. As full time approached Tom dribbled past two defenders down the left wing, found George with a good pass who in turn whipped an excellent ball into the area for Cameron whose goal bound shot was cleared off the line, shortly after the ref blew the whistle for full time and an excellent 2-0 win for the boys.

The other, younger Scotton team consisted of Joseph, Lew D, Charlie, Liam, Jack, Owen, Jack Ch, Elliot and Dan W; and started against Wetherby.

It was clear early on that this was going to be a competitive and even game. Scotton had lots of early pressure, racking up the corners - taken long and short by Joseph - but without being able to turn any of them into the net. Jack went through and only a last gasp tackle kept him out. Jack picked himself up from a heavy fall fall to be ready for the corner - another one we did't capitalise on!!! Were we going to pay for not taking chances.
Sadly - we were. Another break away from Charlie saw him lose the ball close to Wetherby's goal. A quick break away from the boys in orange saw them power into our penalty area and take the lead. 1-0 at half time.

Straight at the restart, the boys switched off and allowed a wetherby player wide on the right to move into free space. Unchallenged he raced in on goal and made no mistake - 2-0 down and now we were up against it.

Rolling their sleeves up from the restart, Scotton applied the pressure - a shot from Charlie struck the post and unluckyly for Weatherby deflected in - we had one back with 5 minutes to go. The game was end to end with some desparate defending as well as more attacking - Charlie again going close; just over the bar. The final whistle went for a grateful Wetherby who held on for a 2-1 win. A defeat, but a good game.

Game two and the boys switched pitches to take on a Knaresborough team looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat against the other Scotton team. Early pressure was Celtics, with a shot just past the post. Time for some Scotton pressure, with Jack just missing wide of the post and then Joseph striking a great shot that smashed against the bar. Liam then saw his header go just wide and then Jack again was unlucky seeing his shot saved at the near post.

With only a minute til the break, Celtic went on the classic counter attack, breaking through and stabbing the ball home to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Out for the second half and Joseph drives forward again, powering past three defenders, finding Charlie who's shot flashed wide. Another strike from Joe saw the Celtic keeper make a great save. Surely we must score? The chance came from a handball in the area from an under-pressure Celtic defense. Joseph calmly spotted the ball and went for power..... great save by the keeper, and on the rebound the keeper again did magnificently to deny Joseph again. It wasn;t to be the boys day and final whistle went - the boys again unluck to be on the wrong end of a very close game.

The third and final game saw the two Scotton squads face each other for a ‘friendly’ kick around to finish off the tournament whilst Celtic and Wetherby battled it out on the other pitch.

With both teams showing signs of fatigue Craig’s team dominated proceedings romping to a half time lead of 5-0 with Cameron B in imperious form up front bagging a first half hat trick (and an understated celebration which needs some further work); George continued his excellent form in front of goal with another to take his tally to 4 for the day and saving the best until last Luke scoring a cracker from just inside the box.

The second half continued in the same form, Cameron L got an early goal to make it 6-0 before Tom got in on the act scoring a quick fire hat trick including one from the spot and one with his left foot, this was sandwiched between a consolation for Jack who found the back of the net well after good build up play. In the end Craig’s team finished as 9-1 winners but this was a productive tournament for both Scotton teams.

All three boys squads have games this weekend at Percy Fields - kicking off at 9am so please arrive no later than 830 for warm up.

The younger of our U7 boys will have received an email from coach about them training at the Cricket Club, and also only some of our U9s will be playing vs Ripley.

The rest of the U9s will be playing games at Wetherby JFC (near the swimming pool in Wetherby) kicking off at 1130 so please arrive no later than 11am or so.

Different boys are in different places but each coach has sent specific details to different groups of boys about arrangements so PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL.

These fundraising events are important and can generate much needed funds towards events like Fun Day, Christmas Parties aswell as help with long-term projects like the Pavilion!

As most of you know these sort of events bring in valuable funds for the club - allowing us to throw events like the Christmas Party, the May Fun Day etc - as well as the work on other club facilities such as the pavillion.
If we can have names of those who can take part, sparing 45 mins or so that would be great.
You would be amazed how generous people can be for our club with the kids there in their kit or club jacket (they normally dont even need to pack the bags - just a smile normally works!!)

Sadly - under the covering of snow the wet ground has frozen making large parts of the ground dangerous. We wouldn't want any accidents or injuries so unfortunately the weather has beaten us again today; no training :(

Boy’s Under 9s (year4s) Match Report for 20 November 2010 v Boroughbridge

With the season in full flow, matches are coming thick and fast. For the second week running the under 9’s have the opportunity to get some more valuable game time under their belts thanks to Darren and the coaches who arranged a friendly match with Boroughbridge.

Craig and John split the squad into two teams so everyone had the opportunity to get a full match; the first game started with Cameron in goal and an outfield of Liam, Ewan, Danny, Elliott, Chris, James and Oscar with Owen starting on the bench.

Boroughbridge started well, putting the Scotton defence under some early pressure with a corner which was well cleared, Danny picked up the ball and found Ewan on the right wing whose determined run won the home side a corner, the subsequent cross was well dealt with by the visiting defence and they quickly counter attacked, the resultant shot just going wide. Straight away Boroughbridge picked up the ball from the clearance and Cameron saved well from a speculative shot. Boroughbridge continued to attack and another shot came in from the right which was well saved by Cameron but fell to a Boroughbridge attacker who placed the ball in the net, 1-0 to the visitors.

The visitors continued to press in Scotton’s half, first a shot went just wide and then Scotton’s defence only managed to clear a ball to the edge of the box and Boroughbridge scored again with a well taken shot. 2-0 to the visitors.

The second goal woke the home side up and Ewan again used his strength to get down the right wing whilst Liam tried the same down the left; Danny was getting more and more into the game in midfield, interchanging well with Ewan but the visiting defence was well organised and chances were few and far between. Defensively Scotton were now more organised with Oscar showing some good awareness to stop a Boroughbridge break whilst Elliott, Chris and James were all working hard to stop the visitor’s midfield and attacking play.

At half time the score remained 2-0 and Craig and John decided to make a couple of changes, Max replaced Danny and took the goalie gloves off Cameron who went up front, Tom replaced James and Owen came on for Liam.

Scotton started the second half on the front foot, Owen did well to find Tom down the left as the home side launched an attack, and a throw in near the corner flag was played in by Ewan to Tom whose shot went just wide. Boroughbridge continued to look dangerous on the break, Chris got in a fine tackle to stop a goal scoring opportunity and Elliott cleared up and put the ball into touch. Max then made a good save from the resultant throw in, getting down well to block the shot; a quick clearance found Tom down the left and he skipped past one defender before shooting just wide.

Scotton continued to press and won a couple of quick corners, the second one was whipped in by Tom from the left and caught the keeper by surprise and went straight in the back of the net, 1-2 and Scotton were back in the game. Max was called on to make another good save as the visitors tried to hit Scotton on the break but more and more of the play was taking place in the visitors half, Ewan supplying Tom with some ammunition to let fly with a shot that was put out for a corner, a succession of corners followed on the right with Tom and Ewan taking turns to get them in the box, Tom saw an effort go just wide and then a scramble in the box was eventually cleared by the Boroughbridge defence.

The visitors however launched another break after some further Scotton pressure, Chris doing well to stop them on the half way line. Max then made his third excellent save of the half, getting down well to block another good shot, whilst Elliott and Owen did well to clear another attack; as the full time whistle approached Scotton broke well from defence, Ewan finding Cameron with an excellent pass, Cameron carried the ball into the Boroughbridge half, and with the defence stretched found Tom with a pinpoint pass, Tom took the ball in his stride and unleashed an excellent shot that the away ‘goalie’ managed to ‘save’ with his head, the ball rebounding away to safety as the final whistle blew, 2-1 to the visitors but congratulations to both sets of players for an excellent game of football; and Scotton can feel a little unlucky to lose after an excellent second half performance.

Game 2 started with Ben in goal and an outfield of Sam, Luke, Tom, Max, Jack, Daniel and George. Scotton started the brighter, with George winning an early throw in deep in the visitor’s half, further pressure from George and Jack saw Scotton win the first corner of the match. Tom crossed the ball and found Daniel in the middle of the visitor’s penalty area who buried the ball in the back of the net with an excellent header, 1-0 to Scotton.

As in the first game, Boroughbridge were quick to break forward and an attack led to a free kick on the edge of the box, the shot came in and despite Tom’s best efforts to head the ball away it hit the top corner of the net, 1-1 and game on. Tom and George were linking up well in attack, whilst Max was marshalling the defence well, bringing the ball out and down the left wing and eventually winning a free kick. Tom tried his luck with a shot which went just wide. Again Tom and George were linking up well in midfield, and when Sam found George with an excellent cross, the ball found its way to Tom at the edge of the box and he steered it home through the visitor’s defensive line. 2-1 to Scotton.

Max again showed his defensive qualities, stopping a Boroughbridge attack at the edge of the box; the ball then went for a corner which was well cleared by Luke and then Sam – Max finished the job getting the ball away. Daniel picked up the clearance down the left and found George whose shot was blocked. Luke and Max then combined well to mop up another Boroughbridge attack, the visitors managed the force a corner which was whipped in and after a scrambled was forced over the line. 2-2 and the match could go either way.

Scotton did not let their heads go down, and George found Tom on the right wing with an excellent pass, Tom skipped past two defenders before being fouled by a rather stiff challenge, Tom managed to get straight up and the free kick was cleared by the visitors. As half time approached there was still time for Max to take one in the guts for the team, as the ball was blasted at him, but in no time he was back on his feet. Half time 2-2

Liam, Danny and James were brought on for the second half in place of Max and Tom; the early play was taking place in midfield with Liam getting on the end of a couple of good runs. Sam got in a good defensive tackle to stop a Boroughbridge attack whilst Liam again broke from defence and was only stopped by a last ditch tackle. Liam and Luke then showed us some good defensive play before the referee blew the whistle for full time. 2-2 and an excellent morning’s football by both teams.

U9’s/Year3s vs Broughbridge – Nov 20 - Match reports

Scottons year 3 U9’s faced a new Boroughbridge U8s (which also included some U7s) at the Cricket Club. After having last week ‘off’ while the year 4’s travelled to Kirkby Malzeard – the boys were keen to get stuck in.

Match one saw Ethan in goal and then Joseph, Cameron, James H, James E, Jack S, and Lewis D take the fields and set of to a flyer. Straight from the kick-off, Scotton pushed forward. Corner. Joseph whipped a low corner in and Cameron struck home the first of what would be many. 1-0.

Cameron had his eye on goal and was stopped by the post and then stabbed the ball just wide. James H and Lewis Dobson then marauded forwarded and hit a great strike that was bravely blocked by the ‘keeper. Surely the second goal would come soon? And it did. Scotton where awarded a free kick near the right corner of the penalty area and Jack S strode forward. Two steps back and Jack bent a sweet strike to see the ball loop over defenders and nestle into the bottom of the goal. 2-0. The second goal sent a wave of relief that it wasn’t going to be ‘one of those days’ and more pressure before the half time break saw a goalmouth scramble with the ball breaking to Cameron B and he stretched a leg to make it 3-0.

Half time, and our keeper hadn't come any where near touching the ball. The boys had had a lot of pressure but the midfield and the back had done very well – especially James E and James H in keeping Ethan quiet.

The second half kicked off and Jack, Cam and James E broke forward. Cam stuck a shot which was blocked by the keeper – only to rebound straight to Jack who slotted home another. 4-0. More pressure saw anther scramble with Joseph and Cam just failing to get the decisive touch. But we didn’t have to wait for another chance, and this time Cameron secured his hat-trick. 5-0. Scotton coaches switched a few players around with the in form strickers moved to defensive duties but that didn’t stop the goals coming. Another great corner from Joseph, flicked by James H fell to Cameron feet for him to back his 4th and the teams 6th. Joseph then found his range as the ball broke to the edge of the area which he smashed home for number 7. Lewis Dobson then took his chance when pushed up front to grab a really patient and well finished goal and as the game coming to an end and Scotton keeping three at the back to try and even things up Joseph managed to grab his second the teams final of the game.
Final score Scotton 9-0 Boroughbridge.

Game 2 saw other half of the Year3’s squad take to the field, with Joel, Alexander, Josh, Tom S, Tom, James C, James Tweed and Charlie (plus a run out for Ethan too).
Kick off for the Boroughbridge and the boys got a shock straight away. A quick break away saw Boroughbridge surge into the box and hit a firm strike that went through Joels legs. 0-1; the Scotton crowd silenced. It was clear that the Broughbridge team were a threat if we didn’t keep our focus. From the restart, the boys got a bit of control. Tom was finding some great positions and space out wide and when the ball fell to him he made no mistake with a thunderbolt which the keeper didn’t get close to; 1-1. Game on. Tom continued to keep his position and find space, and again after a midfield battle the ball broke again to Tom in space for him to edge Scotton in front. 2-1. James Callis was also finding space and using his skills to ghost past the Boroughbridge defence. Another piece of skill from James saw his lay the ball into the centre and Charlie slid home to increase the lead. 3-1. This Scotton team where now plaing some good football in burst; especially going forward. But some tough defending from Tom, Josh and Alexander who was covering up and down the pitch was keeping Boroughbridge chances to a minimum. Another quick break saw a reverse pass from Charlie to James, who found Tom clear for his hat-trick - …. just wide!!!!

James Tweed and James C where working well together on the wing and another couple of break-aways say James C get a well deserved goal. 4-1. Another goal mouth scramble just stayed out of the Boroughbridge net – while at the other end – with Charlie now in goal - Boroughbridge pressed forward and forced a couple of good saves. A great clearance from Charlie found Tom who lashed a great shot which crashed against the bar, hit the line and bounced out… that decisive 3rd goal for Tom just wouldn’t come today. As the game was coming to a close and legs were tiring, Joel got a well deserved goal and in the final minute James got on the score sheet again to make the final score 6-1.

The Boroughbridge team are a new outfit who showed some great promise and will definitely become a strong team. However today Scotton Year3’s – both teams – showed some great effort and lots of ability. However MOTM from Game1 was awarded to Lewis Dobson and from Game2 to Josh Fewtrall who was a solid last line of defence and without whom we would have found ourselves facing more Boroughbridge goals. Special mentions should also go to Cam B, Jack S, Joseph, James C, Alexander and Tom.

Scorchers boys - TRaining/Games - Sat Nov 20

Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 13 November 2010 v Kirkby Malzeard

Scotton’s Under 9’s squad travelled to Kirkby Malzeard for the latest round of games with a healthy squad of Year 4 players. With some excellent facilities available the boys had the luxury of two pitches to play on, so lots of game time and not too much hanging around. Darren’s team started the first game with Lewis in goal and an outfield of Chris, Tom, Ewan, Joseph, Daniel and James. Luke and Jack started on the bench.

Scotton started with real intent, getting at their opponents from the kick off, a couple of quick corners were won and from the second one the defence could only clear it to Tom who fired home from just inside the box; 1-0 and an excellent start by the visitors. Kirkby mounted their first attack of the game but Ewan showed us his defensive qualities clearing his lines well and finding Chris on the left, who in turn fed Tom with an excellent pass, Tom unleashed an excellent shot which was well saved but Chris was alert to the chance and scored Scotton’s second goal, 2-0 to Scotton.

The third goal arrived soon after, Tom and Daniel exchanged passes with Daniel finding Chris with an excellent through ball, and Chris made no mistake and planted the ball in the back of the net, 3-0 to the Scorchers who were on fire. Chris was then replaced by Luke just as Joseph tried to get amongst the scoring with a shot that was well saved. Luke then got straight into the action finding James down the right whose mazy run led to another Scotton corner. Tom whipped in a cross which was met by Ewan, his shot going just wide.

Back in defence Ewan mopped up efficiently and found James who quickly played Tom in for a break whose shot was eventually well saved; Tom whipped in another shot from the resultant corner which again was well saved. Darren then made another change, with Chris returning in place of Joseph, and it was not long before Chris got a well deserved hat-trick, Daniel and James combining well and the ball was crossed into the box with Chris quickest to respond. 4-0 to Scotton and the referee blew for half time.

Darren changed things at half time; James went in goal for Lewis whilst Jack and Joseph replaced Daniel and Chris.

The game continued as it had finished in the first half, Scotton creating an early chance from Lewis, whose shot went just wide. The home side however tried to create an opportunity in the Scotton half only to be thwarted by Joseph’s tenacity in the tackle. This was the only respite for the Kirkby defence as Tom shot just wide and then straight away blocked the subsequent clearance and hammered the ball right past the ‘goalie’ to make it 5-0.

Joseph then got into attacking mode, skipping past three challenges and hitting an excellent cross from the bye line, Tom picked the ball up and placed an excellent pass for Ewan to run onto and he slotted the ball home with aplomb to make it 6-0. The home side had no time to recover before Lewis played in Tom whose pass from the edge of the box found Ewan steaming into the box to make it 7-0. Darren then replaced Tom with Chris and Ewan for Daniel.

Luke showed some nice touches in midfield skipping past a couple of tackles in an attempt to create another Scotton attack, whilst at the other end James was called on to make an excellent save to keep Kirkby out; it wasn’t long before the home side finally breached the solid Scotton defence despite excellent defensive play from Lewis, Joseph and Luke, a shot fired in which just evaded James to make it 7-1.

Joseph made sure the home side’s joy did not last long, with a fantastic shot from distance to make it 8-1 after Lewis saw his shot go just wide. Lewis then created another chance for Scotton, this time producing an excellent cross / shot which could only be cleared to Chris who got his fourth of the day to make it 9-1. As the final whistle approached there was still time for Jack to show us some excellent dribbling skills in midfield, and finding Chris and Lewis whose shots were well saved. And just as full time approached the home team added a second which James could do nothing about. Full time 9-2 to Scotton and an excellent overall team performance.

Game 2 started with Chris in goal and an outfield of Daniel, James, Tom, Ewan, Lewis and Joseph. Jack and Luke starting on the bench.

Both teams started brightly and exchanged early attacking opportunities, Ewan produced the first shot on goal from the right wing which was well saved. Joseph continued to marshal the Scotton defence with some excellent tackling and quick passing which opened up the play for Lewis to fly down the wing, cut in and unleashed a shot which was well held by the home ‘keeper’. Scotton kept up the pressure, Tom winning a couple of corners, the second finding Ewan whose shot went just wide.

Ewan tried his luck again, but found the goalie in excellent form, and then Tom cut in from the right and fired just over. Tom then produced a fantastic bit of magic, dribbling past two defenders before slotting the ball coolly past the ‘keeper’ to make it 1-0. Darren then brought on Luke for Daniel as Scotton took the upper hand; a fine through ball from Lewis found Tom whose shot was blocked. Joseph then produced the skill of the day, showing his ‘Ronaldo’ touch to get past two defenders and work the goalie with an excellent shot which was well saved. Lewis and then Tom then peppered the goal with good shots which the keeper saved. Jack then entered the play in place of Lewis. Luke and James exchanged passes out of defence and found Joseph whose marauding run through the middle led to another shot on goal which was cleared for a corner. As half time approached Tom got in another shot as Scotton continued to press for more goals. HT 1-0 to Scotton.

Luke went in goal for the second half and the game re-started with Jack showing some good touches, Tom picking up the loose ball and firing at the keeper. Scotton then had two corners in a row, Tom getting in another shot which was well saved. Kirkby managed a passage of play in the Scotton half but Joseph, James and Chris defended well, and when the shot came in it did not trouble Luke in the Scotton goal. Scotton then broke quickly, Joseph finding Tom on the half way line, who in turn found Ewan, the two exchanged a quick 1-2 on the edge of the box and Tom fired home to make it 2-0.

The team then came under a period of sustained pressure, with James defending the area well, whilst Ewan blocked a shot which was heading for the bottom corner. Tom and Ewan again combined well, as Scotton launched another attack, Tom’s shot sailing over the bar. James was then replaced by Daniel and Lewis came on for Jack as Scotton forced the play again winning three corners in succession, Tom’s header just going wide.

As the players tired Joseph continued to keep the defence organised with a good clearing tackle. Joseph then got forward to win Scotton a corner which Ewan took; Tom met it on the half volley to make it 3-0 the shot going in off the post. Jack then came on for Tom with a few minutes left of the game, but there was still time for Daniel to work the ball to Ewan whose shot was well saved. Full time 3-0 to Scotton to round off an excellent morning of football by both teams; Darren was left with the difficult job of selecting the player of the match with all nine team members contributed to a great performance by Scotton, in the end Tom just edged it.

League Match Report U11s vs Kirkby Malzeard - 13th November 2010

A chilly morning and a bit of a trek saw the U11 boys playing their game at Kirkby Malzeard.

The game started with a positive attack from Scotton. This attack was quickly cleared by KM. Again Scotton attacked with Alfie sprinting down the wing, this was well defended and went out for a corner. Alfie took the corner that Jamie headed to make a shot on goal. Unfortunately it was well cleared and headed off the down the pitch for a counter attack by KM. Lorcan won a free kick which he took as a shot on goal, the KM goalie did well to save Lorcan’s shot. Jamie picked up the ball and took another shot on goal to score. Jamie and Alfie pressed forward again which at the last minute was well defended by KM. From a corner Seb whipped in a dangerous pass to Jamie that the visitors managed to clear at the last minute. A counter attack by KM enabled Alex to tackle and win the ball going forward for an attack on goal, the goalie came out to meet him and unfortunately Alex was unable to sneak the ball round him.

Yet another attack by Scotton saw Lorcan head down towards goal which with a tough tackle was cleared for a corner. Again Alfie went to the corner flag, the ball ended with Alex who showed some amazing footwork to have an impressive shot on goal, again the ball wouldn’t go in the net and the counter attack lead to Jack having to make his first real save of the game. The final shot of the half saw Jamie having a shot on goal which was impressively saved.

Scotton started the second half attacking as the first half had ended. After a few minutes of end to end football there was an attack on goal by KM which was cleared from the line by Leo. A corner was conceded by KM to give Lorcan the opportunity of a corner. Lorcan curled the corner in to give Leo a good shot on goal which just went wide. After a goal kick Ollie took the ball down the wing and crossed into the box to go in off the goalie for an own goal. From the centre kick Ben tackled well to win the ball and give us an attack. Ben passed to Ollie who crossed into Alex for a shot on goal by Seb, the attempt was thwarted by the KM goalie. A quick counter attack by KM caused Scotton to concede a corner. Lorcan cleared the corner with a solid header that enabled a great run forward by Alex ending with a powerful shot on goal that just hit the side netting. A tackle in midfield gave Scotton the opportunity to attack again. A lovely ball was threaded through by Seb to give Alex a shot on goal to score. Almost straight from the centre kick KM had an attempt on goal forcing Ben to clear off the line. As the minutes flew past Scotton had one last attack on goal with a beautiful cross from Ollie into the box for Seb to just pop it in the net. A fantastic game with a result showing how well Scotton played!

"Continue straight up the main street in the village and take the first left to get to Highside Playing fields."
Basically it's where the Cricket Club play in the village.

Scorchers U8's v Beckwithshaw - Match Reports

Match Report U8 Saturday 23rd October 2010

The Scorchers took their turn to shine last Saturday at the Cricket Club with a series of great matches against the always competitive Beckwithshaw.

Running two pitches at once (the Pavilion pitch and the Bonfire pitch) we split our U8s into equally skilled teams for each to play two 15m EW games.

Pavillion Pitch - Game 1
The game started at quite a pace with James Haveron taking a rare turn between the sticks having to make 2 great saves in the first few minutes. This was followed very quickly by some solid defending by Scorchers. Within seconds the play had gone to the other end with Charlie taking a good shot from just inside the halfway line. From this long goal kick Beckwithshaw attacked with speed and scored. 0-1. From the centre kick Beckwithshaw pushed again with a very strong attack making James H having to clear another strong save. Scotton’s defence were working very hard including an amazing tackle from Jack Sherwin to break up a further Beckwithshaw attack. This clearance enabled Lewis Francis to counter attack and have a shot on goal. Just wide!!. Another attack forced a corner in Scotton’s favour. Cam B took a cracking corner which just evaded everyone. Throughout the first half there was very strong work from Jack S on the wing but the final action of the half was more sterling defence with James E making a great clearance to stop another quick attack.

HT. 0-1.

Beckwithshaw came out very strong after half time and quickly extended their lead by going 0-2 up. The pressure continued and James H in goal made another thumping clearance up the field. James’ kick enabled Lew F to have a great run down the wing which was only just curtailed by Beckwithshaw’s defence. Scotton finally got the goal they had been looking for with a great finish from Charlie after Tom took a chance to break and ran the ball down the wing, passing it to Charlie for the finish. 1-2. However, they say the most dangerous time is just after scoring, and this proved the case. From the centre kick Beckwithshaw had a strong attack which was defended for a corner. They took it quickly with a very strong kick into the box for a goal. A good contest but all would agree that the result was a fair reflection of the game.

Final score 1-3!

Pavillion Pitch - Game 2
Game 2 – and Scotton were looking to equal the scores. Within the opening minute of this second game Jack S took a fantastic shot on goal and scored. 1-0. This was followed by a continuation of this strong start with Scotton dominating the first half. Charlie quickly got the ball and scored a convincing second goal for the boys. 2-0. Shortly after the second goal Beckwithshaw won a free kick. It was a power shot which was defended by Jack S in fantastic style. Lewis got the chance to take a corner which was well defended by Beckwithshaw, who broke away and forced new keeper Lew F to make 2 great saves, James Haveron to defend a good chance on goal and Charlie to defend a corner all within a few minutes! Another opportunity by Beckwithshaw was very well defended by Jack S.

HT. 2-0

The second half opened with an attack by Beckwithshaw which was saved convincingly by Lew F. Again another attack came which was again defended by Jack S. Beckwithshaw then earned a corner and was tucked away giving the Keeper little chance. 1-2. Game on. The centre kick enabled Joseph N to get a break which was defended well. With all boys getting tired the play was now end to end with some fantastic attacking and some great defending. Finally Jack S got the break he deserved and scored his second of the game.

Final Score. 3-1!

Men of the match across the two Pavillion Pitch games were Lewis Francis for his work outfield and in goal in the second match – and to Jack Sherwin for his goals and his braveness after taking a pretty hefty kick in the face.

Bonfire Pitch - Game 1
On the Bonfire Pitch, the other half of the U8s kicked off and it was clear from the start it was going to be an even and competitive game. The first pressure was Scotton’s with a quick break and a flash shot across the face of the Becks goal. The boys pressed again and gained a free kick on the end of the Becks box for a handball. Joseph N stepped up and hit a low drive which the Becks defence scrambled for a throw. Becks came back with their own pressure, with Josh and Alexander were working well at the back to keep the danger away from Joel in goal. More Scotton pressure saw the ball bounce free to Alexander who was waiting for just such a chance from the half way line. Hi struck the ball perfectly and it flew like a rocket into the back of the net. Great strike.

HT. 1-0

The boys kicked of the second half like they finished the first. More pressure, with Lewis Dobson now playing up front saw a goalmouth scramble with Lewis D getting his toe to the ball to stab it home. They all count. 2-0. Beckwithshaw cam out fighting, and James Tweed (now in goal) had to make a great instinct save to keep a shot out. But the pressure continued and despite the back 3s best efforts couldn’t withstand for ever with Beckwithshaw pulling a goal back with just 2 minutes remaining. The boys were now under intense pressure and everyone was needed in defence. One final great corner from Beckwithshaw flew across the goal dangerously but no-one could get a touch. The final whistle blew, and the boys had held on.
Final Score. 2-1

Bonfire Pitch - Game 2
Losing a few to a party, the team took the field again, and it seemed the exertions of the first game had taken a bit of the energy out of the boys. It was backs to the wall defending for much of the first half with what was some (admittedly) great Becks play. Josh and Joseph deserve particular praise for their strong defending and some great tackles. On the rare occasion in the first half that Scotton had some possession Joel and Lewis pressing and holding the ball up to give the backs a break.

HT. 0-0

In the second half, Lewis and Joseph swapped into the back to keep it tight while Alexander was having some god success up front. The half was much more even. Almost against the run of play Becks broke away to fire in a goal. Their pressure had deserved it but the boys were disappointed. A few positional changes and we were soon pressing again. But some tired legs didn’t quite have the speed required to turn chances into goals and as the final whistle went Beck had got even in the double header.
Final score. 0-1.

Man of the match for these games goes to Lewis Dobson for being in the right place at the right time both to score and to break up lots of Becks pressure.

Parents Meeting and Training arrangements for Saturday 30th October

As outlined in the October news letter, the committee of Scotton Scorchers will be holding a parents meeting at the village hall in Scotton starting at 10.15am. This is to enable the committee to communicate the plans for the season and to give parents the opportunity to ask any questions that they have about the running of the club.

In order to facilitate the parents meeting, all training sessions will be starting and finishing at the same time next week as follows:

• All the girls squads will be at Percy Fields from 9.45 to 11.15am
• All the boys squads will be at the Village Hall pitches, also from 9.45 to 11.15am

We hope that you will make every effort to attend the parents meeting, particularly the parents of children who are new to the Scorchers.

Scorchers Unbeaten Run Continues

The seasons roll on. Time continues its’ relentless march and Scotton Scorchers U7 remain a force to be reckoned with.

Autumn seemed neither mellow nor fruitful – apart from the ripening mushrooms around the pitch – as coach Hampson put his elite U7s through their warm-up routine. Harsh rain blew in heavy swathes across a lead-lined firmament. The sheep in the next field would not, or could not, raise their heads against the wind.

But as the team was announced, Capello-like, just before the whistle the weather broke and a ring of cool blue began to show itself around the corners of the sky.

Scotton moved quickly up field from the kick-off, playing towards the Sheep End. Early pressure down the right saw the Scorcher’s formation quickly lost as the team sensed an early chance and charged forward en masse. To the coach’s dismay, when Ripley broke away the Scorcher’s defence was nowhere to be seen. Smart work in foot and brain saw Ripley’s number 15 finish clinically across the face of the keeper low into the corner of the net. 0 – 1 and the game hardly a minute old.

This Scotton team is hewn from Yorkshire grit though and the restart saw them retaining formation and begin to boss the game. A determined tackle in a bunched midfield allowed Johnny to surge forward and his shot rebounded unluckily away off the post. From the resulting corner, a low shot somehow tangled in the Ripley keeper’s legs. An anguished cry rang out from players and spectators alike: how did it not get through?

Ripley came back at the Scorchers. The Rockets’ midfield pair offer skills in abundance and an intimidating physical presence. Yet the Scorchers broke again, diagonally left to right, turning defence into attack. A low shot flew wide and for the second time gasps rose from the crowd. Still 0 -1, but the Scorchers sensed a breakthrough was coming. Ben Tweed shot well from the right to force another fine save, then a corner. Another shot flew in and several players couldn’t help but throw hands to head in amazement that the scores had not drawn level.

But with the game still at 0 – 1 Ripley came out again to attack. A quick move to the right drew a foul for a full-blooded challenge from Ben Rosey. The resulting free-kick was sweetly struck and destined for the same corner as Ripley’s opener until a full-stretch leap from Jacob pushed the ball to safety around the post.

This was the Scorchers’ turning point. Ripley’s skill would deliver chances and they needed goals of their own.

As play continued James brought the ball calmly forward from defence, put the ball to Harrison who layed a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Johnny. The shot is wide but suddenly the Scorchers’ belief is back and almost immediately from open play Ben Tweed shoots low into the net. 1 – 1.

After the restart, Ripley begin to rely more and more on their talismanic number 15. However his Ronaldoo-like spins only got him so far against a now more resolute Scorchers midfield and one piece of showboating too much saw the ball picked off him. Possession theirs, Scotton poured forward – though with much better shape and James pounced to drive the ball home. Scorchers 2 -1 up.

As Ripley tried to come back Jacob saved again but in the run-up to half time the game was all Scotton; the highlight an outrageous double free kick struck by Johnny and Ben Tweed simultaneously. The twin contacts put a heavy spin on the ball but, with the keeper stranded, heavy-legged; the ball flicked the post and just fell wide. ‘Incredible foota-ball’, as the Italians might say – and a feat that this Scoop has never seen in over thirty-five years on the sidelines.

Half time couldn’t come soon enough for Ripley.

For the second half Coach Hampson mixed things up. Jacob Cardani took over in nets; Bruno, Freddie and Callum stepped on further up the pitch.

The sun was now shining brightly and the lack of a reversal of ends saw some parents come over just a little combative in a tightly packed crowd. One mum, who asked not to be named, commented that ‘victory would be all the sweeter’ when forced to play into bright sunlight for the whole game. While such comments reflect the battling spirit of the Scorchers, one hopes they won’t spill over into scenes of unpleasantness as the season reaches its’ climax.

The second half was a continental fan’s dream. Almost continual defence for Scotton.

With Ripley’s number 15 attempting a one-man come back for the hosts and employing good movement, direct passing and a spirit of adventure, Scotton were under regular, and heavy, pressure.

Scotton’s chances in this half were rarer and after a shot by Johnny, Ripley broke fast. Thankfully for team, coach – and the increasingly rapt parents – Callum and Freddie had a blinder in defence. A series of perfectly timed challenges, sensible defensive positioning and strength on and off the ball saw Ripley’s attacks repulsed again and again. And when Ripley resorted to shooting from further out Jacob Cardani was up to the task, including smothering a good long shot mid-way through the half. But the pressure was building and eventually a piece of individual brilliance saw Ripley draw level. Of course, it was the number 15. Finding space in central midfield he strode forward and placed a delightful shot off the outside of his right boot into the corner of the net. Jacob Cardani had no chance. 2 – 2.

Most of the game was now in the Scotton half and only a series of great tackles from Callum and Freddie and another save from Jacob C kept the Scorchers in the game.

Though the game was in its dying minutes by now there was still time for further twists. The ball fell to Jacob on the halfway line and a pleasing swivel turn with close control saw him set-up to release a shot powerfully at the Ripley goal. An agonised ‘Oooohhh’ rose from the crowd as the ball struck the outside of the post yet again.

Still Ripley poured forward. Bruno’ s fine defensive block kept the Rockets at bay but the pressure told and close to the whistle the Rockets found themselves clear in front of goal again. Jacob Cardani stood firm and made a fine double save to keep the scores even and Scotton on track for an unbeaten start to the season.

The half - and the game - ended with a committed Callum giving everything to block Ripley’s final attack.

“Brilliant.” Was a delighted Coach Hampson’s summary of Callum’s last minute block and the team’s performance.

Callum was also mentioned in Man of The Match dispatches but this week’s award went to Freddie for tireless determination and great all round effort.

In the second game, Scotton won 6 – 3. The six were comprised of a brace of goals for Harrison, Johnny and Ben Tweed. Harrison was awarded man of the match, which his own parents neutrally and independently described as ‘the goal of the season’.

The development side fared less well against a Ripley team packed with bigger boys and although they lost their first game heavily they improved throughout and defended better and better as the match went on.

In the first match Max won man of the match and a good performance in goal found Alex Navier given the honours in the second game.

Boy’s Under 9s Match Report for 16 October 2010 v Ripley

Ripley Rockets were the hosts for Saturday’s games with the Year 4’s representing the Under 9 squad this week. Scotton’s squads, the ‘Fireballs’ and ‘Sizzling Scorchers’ were looking to build on the impressive start to the season after victory against Tockwith. The ‘Fireball’s’ started with Cameron in goal and an outfield of Sam, Oscar, George, Luke, Lewis and Dan with Owen and James starting on the bench.

The home side started the brighter but Scotton defended well with Lewis tackling well to break up play. It was not long before the ‘Fireballs’ launched the first attack of the morning, George showing great strength to break from midfield, his shot well saved by the ‘keeper’. George created another chance; this time as a result of an excellent pass by Dan, a twisting run by George into the box saw his shot saved.

Lewis continued to show his good form linking well with George up front; again George used his strength to get forward, another fine shot saved by the ‘keeper’. Ripley however pushed the visitors back, good defensive play by Oscar managed to stem the pressure and when Ripley finally got a shot in, Cameron was equal to the task saving well. Sam then showed his defensive qualities, clearing a dangerous ball for a corner.

Cameron then turned provider by launching an excellent clearance that found George whose instinctive shot was again well saved. The coaches made the first change of the game replacing Dan and Oscar with Owen and James.

Ripley then had a period of intense pressure, two shots in quick succession were well saved by Cameron, a third cracked the post but Cameron’s quick thinking saw the ball cleared for a corner which was cleared by Luke and then Owen. James then picked the ball up and found George with an excellent pass; again using his strength George made room for a shot which went just wide of the right hand post.

Again Ripley attacked, James and Luke battled hard to repel any danger and when the home side did get a shot in Cameron was again well placed to make a comfortable save. The turning point in the game then came, as Cameron launched another excellent clearance, the ball found its way to George whose shot was buried in the bottom corner, 1-0 to Scotton and a well worked goal by George. Scotton held their own in midfield as half time approached, whilst Lewis managed to get in a well worked shot that went just wide as the ref blew for half time. 1-0 to the ‘Fireballs’

The second half started with Oscar and Dan replacing Lewis and Luke. Ripley started brightly immediately trying to put the Scotton defence under pressure, Dan and George showing good defensive work getting the ball clear, however Cameron was soon called on to make another two good saves,

Scotton tried to release the pressure on the defence with Dan breaking quickly from the back and finding George whose shot was well saved, James then tried to extend the lead with another fine effort which went just wide. Further pressure was applied by the visitors, Sam and Dan combining well to find George whose shot was saved and scrabbled away for a corner. The coaches made another change, bringing off George and Sam for Lewis and Luke. Cameron was again called on to keep the home side at bay, pulling off another great save; further attacking play from Ripley was broken up by Oscar in midfield. Cameron then made an excellent double save to keep Scotton ahead; a corner followed which was cleared by Owen and then James. Sam and George then rejoined the action in place of Oscar and Dan.

As the game moved towards full time Ripley tried to grab an equaliser with an intense period of attacking play but Cameron and the defence withstood everything that was thrown at them, Cameron in particular making three vital saves in succession. There was just enough time for James to rampage down the right wing passed four Ripley players and find Lewis, whose shot was well hit but smacked the post and went wide. The final action saw Cameron once again save well as the referee blew for full time, 1-0 to Scotton ‘Fireballs’ and a man of the match performance from Cameron in goal.

Game 2 saw the ‘Sizzling Scorchers’ take the field with Ben in goal and an outfield comprising of Liam, Tom J, Ewan, Max, Daniel and Chris, with Jack, Elliot and Tom on the subs bench.

The ‘Sizzling Scorchers’ started the game brightly with Tom J, Max and Liam combining well create a couple of early chances for Tom and Liam whose shots went just wide. Ewan then joined in the action in midfield, finding Max with an excellent ball who in turn found Tom J on the left wing, Tom weaved passed the Ripley full back and provided an excellent pass for Daniel to shoot and score his first goal for the Scorchers, 1-0.

Scotton continued their bright start to the match, Tom J won a couple of corners in succession, whilst Liam and Tom both tried their luck with shots just inside the box. Eventually the pressure paid off, with Liam finding Tom J whose shot found the back of the net; 2-0 to the visitors. The coaches then changed things around, replacing Chris and Daniel with Tom and Jack.

At this point Scotton were taking the game to Ripley, Tom J was creating havoc down the left, supplying both Max and Liam with good shooting opportunities, Ewan and Jack showed their tenacity in defence breaking up a rare Ripley attack, which led to the third Scotton goal, Jack finding Max whose excellent pass found Tom J on the left, Tom weaved his magic going passed three defenders before cutting in from the bye line and finding the net from a tight angle. 3-0 to Scotton and another replacement with Elliot replacing Ewan.

Ripley then produced a good move going forward and a shoot which Ben could not keep out, 3-1 and the home side were back in the game. It was only a matter of minutes before Scotton restored their 3-goal advantage, Max again providing Tom J with an excellent opportunity to shot and he completed a well deserved hat-trick. HT 4-1 to Scotton.

Tom J and Liam made way for Chris and Ewan for the second half. Scotton continued as they left off, with Jack, Max and Ewan combining well in midfield, then Ewan showed us his defensive qualities with an excellent tackle to break up play; Elliot then picked up a knock and was replaced by Liam just as Ben pulled off an excellent save to keep the three goal advantage.

At the other end Chris, Liam and Max combined well and Max made no mistake scoring with an excellent shoot to make it 5-1 to the visitors. Liam then tried his luck, his shot just wide. Elliot and Tom J then rejoined the match replacing Max and Liam. Tom J got straight in to the game again firing just wide after good play by Tom, Elliott and Ewan.

As the full time whistle approached Ewan showed us his attacking flair, battling for the ball on the edge of the box and firing a shot passed the keeper to make it 6-1 at full time to the ‘Sizzling Scorchers’ and a man of the match performance from Tom J with a first half hat-trick.

The third game of the morning was a 9 versus 9 game; the ‘Fireballs’ playing the first half and the ‘Sizzling Scorchers’ playing the second.

With two extra players on the pitch and both squads having given their all in the first two games, it was not surprising that the match was a tight affair; Lewes continued his good form with some sound defending whilst Luke, replacing Cameron in goal from Game 1 provided us with the best save of the half. James, Sam and Dan were working hard in midfield to ensure Ripley had limited attacking options. Cameron carved out Scotton’s best chance of the half with an excellent shot which was parried by the goalie to George who under pressure just shot wide. HT 0-0

The ‘Sizzlers’ replaced the ‘Fireballs’ for the second half and the game kicked off with Ewan defending well and finding Tom J with an excellent pass, Tom J used his pace to create an opportunity for s shot which was well saved. Tom J then turned provider, finding Jack in the box after good play down the left wing, Jack’s shot just scrapped past the post. Ewan made an excellent run into the box which was only stopped by an outstretched leg, penalty to Scotton. Tom stepped forward to take the penalty, only to shoot wide of the left hand post, shades of John Terry (Moscow 2008); it was not long before Scotton did find the net, after good play from Max, Chris found himself one on one with the Ripley keeper and coolly fired into the net, 1-0 to the visitors. As the final whistle approached there was still time for Liam to smack the post with an excellent shot.

Full time 1-0 to Scotton and a clear sweep with three victories and two clean sheets; an excellent performance from the Year 4’s.

Boy’s Match Report for 25th September 2010 v Tockwith

U11s
LEAGUE GAME
On a bright but chilly morning both teams took the field for a 9 o'clock kick-off. After early pressure from Tockwith, Scotton got their first chance with Seb's shot going into the side netting. Tockwith were the next with a chance, but their shot from distance went wide, Scotton replied with a good effort from Alex. The game was proving to be quiet entertaining and evenly matched after 10 mins. Scottons next attack involved a good exchange of play between Seb and Alfie before the shot going into the side netting. GOAL!! Scotton win a corner and in the ensuing melly the ball ended up in the net with Alex getting the praise. Lorcan had a good run crossing to Alex who shot just wide.
HALF TIME 1-0 SCOTTON.

Tockwith restart the brighter with 2 attemps but no goal, Lorcan then narrowly misses from a corner, followed by a cross from Alfie to Alex who just misses. GOAL!! Tockwith equalize 1-1. Following the restart James went on one of his mazy runs but the goalie was equal to James's shot. Two more efforts from Alex but narrowly misses, a long range effort from Lorcan which went just over the bar. Scotton were still pressing to find the winner right until the final whistle and the boys did everything but get the goal their play deserved.. FINAL SCORE 1-1. (Well done to all who contributed to a entertaining game of football).

FRIENDLY MATCH
After a brisk start Scotton had the ball bouncing around the the Tockwith goal-line but just couldn't get it over, when it finally broke free a quick break saw Tockwith score. After the restart a break from Scotton gave Callum a chance only to have the goalie save. Scotton continued to try hard, again having the ball cleared off the Tockwith line only for them to break down the pitch and score another. Luck was against the boys with every break from Tockwith seemed to result in another goal, with the final result been 7-0. Chins up boys and lets train hard for the next game to reverse the score.

U9s BLACK SQUAD
GAME 1
The Year 4 boy’s first game of the season saw the Black squad welcome Tockwith to the Scotton Cricket pitch on what was a cold start to the season. With the visitors short on numbers one or two familiar faces wore the colours of Tockwith so that everyone got a good competitive game of football.

With a wealth of talent at his disposal Craig started with Luke in goal along with Oscar, Elliott, Sam A, Vinny, Cameron L, Ewan and Cameron B. Scotton started with some early pressure, Cameron B attacked the left wing well and won a couple of early corners. Tockwith slowly got into their stride with both sides cancelling each other out, Tockwith looked to create a chance of their own which was snuffed out by some good defending from Sam and Elliott allowing Cameron B to break from midfield, finding Vinny with an excellent pass, good work from Vinny just outside the box found Cameron B in space and he made no mistake, 1-0 to Scotton.

Tockwith were not knocked out of their stride however and tried to get straight back in the game, but Luke saved well from the resulting cross. Scotton were now seeing more of the ball in the visitors half, winning a succession of corners, which resulted in a shot from Cameron B to make the score a deserved 2-0.

In quick succession some more good work from Cameron L and Oscar presented Ewan with an opportunity to shoot which he did to extend Scotton’s lead to 3-0 just before the break, as the half time whistle approached Scotton underlined their dominance with three corners in a row, although Tockwith held firm and managed to break forward and get a excellent shot in which was well saved again by Luke. Half time 3-0 to Scotton.

The second half started with Ewan replacing Luke in goal, and they applying good pressure to the Tockwith defence. To the visitors credit it was not all one way traffic and Ewan showed he can be a cat between the sticks with a fine save following Luke’s excellent display in goal in the first half.

Scotton then turned the screw, winning a couple of corners in succession which put Tockwith on the back foot, Cameron B got in an excellent cross which found Vinny in enough space for him to make it 4-0 with a well taken goal.

Ewan then turned creator, firing a massive goal kick into the path of Cameron L who coolly turned the ball into the net, 5-0 to the home side. Tockwith never let their heads drop however and as the game moved towards full time Ewan was called on to make a series of excellent saves in order to keep a clean sheet for Scotton. Full time 5-0.

GAME 2
Craig rang the changes in game 2, Dan taking his place in goal with an outfield made up of George, Tom, Owen, Liam, Jack, Daniel and Chris. Tockwith started with a couple of Scotton’s star performers from game 1.

The early exchanges in this game were played out in the middle of the park as both teams cancelled each other out, however it wasn’t long before the home side created the first real chance, George breaking forward well and shooting just wide. Tockwith then launched their first attack of the game; however excellent defending from Owen and Tom cleared the danger, with the visitors winning the first corner of the game. Tom cleared the subsequent cross with a fine header, which was cleared out further by Jack to George who launched another strong run into the Tockwith half, after some good passing play with Liam, the ball found it way to Tom whose shot struck the post and went wide.

Dan was then called into action for the first time making a good save from a well worked Tockwith attack. Craig then brought on Max and James in place of Tom and Daniel. Dan was called on again to make a great save after some excellent Tockwith pressure. Tom and Daniel then rejoined the game in place of Liam and Chris as the game was pressed in midfield with Max and James working well for the home side. and as the game moved towards half time Scotton thought they had got the lead when a fierce shot from Tom was well saved but rebounded to George who found the net only for the ref to bring the game back for handball. Halt time score 0-0

The second half started with Chris going in goal and straightaway Tom got in a good cross which George fired towards goal, the shot being well saved by the visiting keeper. The subsequent corner found its way to Tom whose shot was again well saved as Scotton ramped up the pressure. A rare Tockwith attack led to a corner for the visitors, again good defending this time by Max and James cleared the danger. Jack showed us some good touches in midfield as Scotton continued to dominate the game however Chris was called upon to make a great save from a Tockwith shot. The subsequent corner was again headed away by Tom and cleared by Owen and Max.

Scotton then started peppering the visitor’s goal with a succession of shots, first from Tom, then Sam and another effort from Tom. The resulting corner was then cleared by Tockwith. Craig then swapped Jack with Dan as the home side went looking for victory.

Max and James combined well in midfield moving the ball forward into the Tockwith half, the attack was cleared by the visiting defence for a corner, which found Liam whose shot went just wide. The visitors however still tried to get the ball forward and only some smart defending from Max kept the scores level, the ball went for a corner and Tockwith got in a good cross which saw an excellent shot cannon off the post.

Scotton having rode their luck somewhat then went on the attack; George firing in a shot which was well saved and the follow up went just over the bar from Tom. Daniel then tried his luck with an excellent shot which again was saved.

As the clock ticked down George then won a free kick which he fired in just wide, but Tockwith could not clear the ball and Scotton won another free kick when Tom was tripped close to the right hand corner flag. With very little time left, Tom whipped in a shot from the narrowest of angles and the ball went in off the post, 1-0 to Scotton and an excellent goal to break the deadlock and not long after the referee blew for full time to round off an excellent couple of games of football by both sides.

U9 RED SQUAD
GAME 1
The year three boys were playing at Percy fields. Tockwith opened the scoring early in the game but this did not deter the Scotton boys. Jack Sherwin came close after a good run up the wing just before James Callis managed to equalise for Scotton. This was extra special for James as it was his debut for Scotton. Scotton continued to press during the first half but could not make the pressure tell and the teams went in at half time level.

The second half continued in the same vain with Scotton pressing most of the time. On the odd occasion when Tockwith did threaten they were met by the Scotton defence particularly Joseph, who not only defended well but then showed good distribution of the ball. Scotton continued to pressurise the Tockwith defence and had they had their shooting boots on the match would have been won more comfortably. There were a few nearer misses with Jack just kicking over the Tockwith goal. With time running out and the draw looking inevitable Jack and Joseph exchanged passes through the centre for Jack to score the winning goal. There was barely time for the kick off and Scotton had emerged victorious in this first tricky encounter against a defiant Tockwith side.

GAME 2
Scotton started very brightly with Charlie weaving through the Tockwith defence only to be thwarted at the end by a good save from Tockwith keeper. This was not the pattern for the whole game as both teams were evenly matched. Joseph yet again was defending and distributing the ball very well and on the odd occasion when Tockwith did get past him, Benjamin was equal to any shots fired in. The game ebbed and flowed in both directions with James and Charlie both coming close to opening the scoring.
The second half continued the same as the first. Joseph made several good runs, but the Tockwith defence always managed to prevent the Scotton boys from scoring. Both sides pressed for a late winner but neither could break down the well-disciplined defences. This match was an evenly fought game where both teams cancelled each other out with good defending. And the nil -nil score line was just about right. Players of the matches were Joseph Navier and James Callis.

SCORCHERS 7s FRY TIGERS FOR BREAKFAST

Under a blue sky straight from the Mediterranean and with the soft, golden leaves of Autumn's first fall settling on a perfectly prepared pitch, Scotton U7s strode out to start their season against Tockwith Tigers this Saturday. Although all strapping Yr 2 boys, the Tockwith team amounted to only 6, so Scotton started with Jacob Kavanagh in goal, Ben Tweed and Harry as the defensive line and Johnny, James and Harrison as a free-attacking midfield.

Scotton kicked off towards the village and immediately applied heavy pressure to the Tockwith defenders. A sustained opening barrage of attacking football from a hungry Scorchers team saw Scotton push towards the Tockwith goal again and again. When Tockwith attempted to staunch the flow of Scotton attacks with a break up the left flank a perfectly-timed crunching tackle from Harrison saw them quickly repelled. The first half of the first half was all Scotton, with the highlight a quality shot from Johnny. Just wide.

Tockwith played through the middle whenever they tried to push forward into attack and looked threatening. Although their attackers are big boys, every attack was repulsed by Ben Tweed. Ben, like a young Franz Beckenbauer, had taken the coach's advice to stick in position and did a sterling job as sweeper. All that possession and a flowing move that saw Johnny hit a post with a double strike - first with boot then off the head as the ball rebounded off the keeper and the excitement of the moment saw Scotton lose their shape and push forward with abandon.

Tockwith pounced. A long ball from defence played through the inside right channel to their lone striker exposed Jacob Kavanagh in goal. A cool finish across the keeper and 0 -1, Tockwith were up. Lesser U7 teams could have folded, but this Scorchers side is made of sterner stuff. From the restart Scotton poured forward forcing a corner and the game was back in the Tockwith half. This time though, Scotton kept a better shape and when a long back pass sold the last Tockwith defender short, Ben Tweed raced upfield and scored low into the bottom corner of the net after disposessing the hapless last man skillfully.

At 1-1, Scotton were looking strong. A long-range free kick from Johnny whistled past the right post through a crowd of defenders with the keeper, unsighted, nowhere. The half ended with another solid and well-timed tackle from Harrison preventing any more than a single attack by Tockwith all half.

At half-time Coach Hampson shook things up. Jacob Cardani came off the bench into goal and Jacob Kavanagh moved up to centre forward. The midfield were rested and Callum, Freddie and Elliot came on to give the Scorchers fresh legs.

The opening of the second half was scrappy as Scotton sought to re-establish their dominance, but a Peter Crouch-style stretched interception from Jacob K left Scotton in a good position after just a few minutes. Jacob saw his chance and dribbled into the box. Jacob's shot squeezed under the despairing keepers' body and just trickled over the line. Against the defenders' protests the ref blew up. Goal. 2-1 Scorchers. If only England could have had such decisive refereeing at the World Cup.

Realising the game was nearly beyond them, Tockwith pressed forward harder than before and only a fine save from a courageous Jacob Cardani in the Scotton goal stopped Tockwith levelling the match. At this point, coach Hampson started to sub some of his tired players to keep the team fresh and snuff out Tockwith's dwindling spirit.

Callum, defending well, played the ball to Ben Tweed whose mazy run through the middle was only ended by a Tockwith foul. From just inside the opposing half, Ben launched the free kick high into the Tockwith box, where Jacob K stole in front of the keeper to cheekily touch the ball in for his second of the match and the Scorchers' third. With the win in the bag, Scotton were rampant. With minutes to go another dazzling run from Ben Tweed left the Tockwith defence is such disarray that
one defender dropped to the floor and picked the ball up to prevent a certain goal after the ball bounced back off a post. Harrison stepped up to take the penalty and struck it beautifully. The rising ball just missed the outside right of the post. Shame.

As the full-time whistle blew and the players celebrated, Tockwith were lucky to escape only 3-1 down. A delighted management team awarded Ben Tweed man of the match and Coach Hampson decribed the result as "deeply satisfying" and the team's play, "lots of effort, lots of smiles" as "very good".

A great start. In the other matches Scotton scored 7-1 and 5-1 victories with Callum and Johnathan Haase and young Milo Smith singled out for praise by the coaching staff.

We are pleased to announce dates for Curry Nights - where we can all go for a nice meal, free glass of wine!!!
Some of the Curry Nights were well attended last season - and it would be nice if we can do that again this season - showing our support to one of the Club Sponsors.
Everyone is welcome - and gives parents the chance to meet the Coaches & Committee, ask questions about the Club, Pavillion, etc.

GOALKEEPER COACHING SESSION - FRI 24TH SEPT 10

The Club was pleased and proud to welcome Gary Hindle (from North Riding County FA) to Percy Fields last Friday.
The session was well attended (12 players in all) with a range of squads, both boys & girls, being represented.
Gary gave a wonderful session, with lots of new ideas for warm-ups and what to do on match days - with everyone closely listening and watching his demonstrations.
It was very fulfilling for all players that attended - and we were very lucky to have such a session with a qualified, experienced GK Coach. Gary even explained some drills he showed us have been used by Premier League clubs & England!!!!
A massive thanks to Gary on behalf of the attendees and the Club for braving the bad weather and coming across from Scarborough to give such a great session!
Hopefully we may see him back in the not too distant future??

Further to the information given out at training last week, here are the arrangements for this Saturdays match against Tockwith.

ALL U7s
Please Arrive at Percy Fields at 8.30am for warm up. Games kick off at 9am.
We will have the usual 2 pitches set up for the games which will be 10 min each-way - with our older and more 'established' players playing Tockwith on one. One the other; and to ease in the newest and youngest Scorchers we will look to mix up the boys from both teams. As ever, red socks, black shorts, drink and shin gaurds.

U11s
Please Arrive at Percy Fields at 8.30am for warm up. Games kick off at 9am.
First game is the league fixture - 20m EW.
Second game is the 'friendly' (not that all games shouldnt be friendly) but is no less important to both players and coaches alike. As you know we are fortunate enough to have a strong squad this year however the coaches will endeavor to make sure we give all boys as equal chance as is possible.
As ever, red socks, black shorts, drink and shin gaurds.

U9s
Due to high numbers (and wih the help pf Tockwith bringing extra players) we will be splitting the Under 9's into 2 squads.
One squad will play at Percy Field (Year 3's) and the other squad will play at the Cricket Pitch in Scotton (Year 4's)
Parents please make sure you arrive at the right pitch!

Here are the meeting times etc for both squads.

YEAR 3's Only (Red Squad)
08.30 - Meet at PERCY FIELDS for team selection and warm up

At each location we will be playing two matches, with two different teams, so everyone will get a game.

Please Note:
We will be requiring parents to take on the responsibility of match report writing and for kit wash rota - leaving the coaches to concentrate on what YOU want them to focus n - the coaching.
For ALL squads, whilst the matches are being played the children not taking part will be asked to support their team mates on the sideline.

Please could I also ask that any outstanding Subs and Registration forms and contact details be brought along on the day, so that everyone can take part in the games.

SCORCHERS CRICKET MATCH This Sunday 12 Sept

Parents/Carers and Coaches, this sunday sees Scotton Scorchers JFC play Scotton CC in a fundraising cricket match at Scotton cricket pitch.
Play will commence at 1pm. If there are any parents/carers who would like to play please contact either Mark Bedford or Andy Black to let them know.
We are not short of players but would like to see some more parents 'roped in'/play!
There are also lots of other positions to help out with on the day (BBQ/Raffle Tickets/Bouncy Castle attendants)so please let us know if you can help in anyway.
Just 5 minutes of your time would be of great help, the more the merrier!
More raffle prizes would be helpful too if anybody has anything they could donate please.
At the very least it would be great to see as many faces as possible on sunday to cheer/jeer on the players and hopefully have a great day.
Please come along and enjoy some cricket,bar,bbq and bouncy castle and ultimately raise some much needed funds to help with the running of the club.
